I am interested in getting a 2008 CRV LX in glacier blue. Well, I got the price down to what I wanted to pay but I can't agree on the license and registration fees...in my city the tax rate is 7.25% but the salesmen wanted 10% because he said the other 1.75% is for license and registration fee so basically it comes down to that last 1.75%.

Is he trying to pull a fast one and get a higher margin on the sale or does he have a basis for it?

Here in California, you can generally look to pay about 10% for tax and license when you buy a car.

I don't know any thing about buying cars in California...but 10% -7.25% is 2.75%. You are getting a 2WD LX, so just for the ease of the math, let's assume your paying $20000. $20000 x.0275 = $550. For just registeration and license? Seems pretty hefty to me, but then again I don't live in California.

Welcome to the club, and good luck with your purchase.

Thanks for the welcome. :)
Yeah that seems hefty to me too. The price he gave me is $24,000 out the door, but I am only willing to pay $22,600 OTD. This is including fog lights they agreed to install for me.

Something I noticed on all the cr-v they had on the lot is a $990 add on called "protection package" I laughed so hard when the salesman explained to me what it was....5 floor mats and mud flaps. lol

Oh my mistake the tax rate is 8.25% not 7.25

Registration fees depend on many variable. Sales price of vehicle, type of vehicle, etc.. Keep in mind that there are other documentation fees that you pay. I would probably check with the DMV to get an idea of what the registration fee would be, then ask the dealer for a detailed breakdown of fees for tax, license, and documentation. Of coarse, if you buy the car, all of this will be on the sales contract. Look at it carefully before you sign it. If things don't add up, then you will know something is fishy. Here is a link to a registration fee calculator.

Thanks for the link. After I put in the numbers of purchase price at $20,831 I got a tax and registration of $1919. Ouch.

The sad thing is that some people will fall for these antics. Why in the hell can't you just buy a car with out all this BS to wade through?
