I heard of this additive called Ethos you add 2 oz for a tank and it supose to increse you mpg and reduce emissions. Has anybody used it . I have a 2006 CRV and get about 19 mpg in the city ,I am not happy with that Bob:confused:

If it was the real deal, wouldn't we all just be buzzing about it?

A quick search revealed two types of hits, advertising for it (which my snake oil & BS detector was in high alarm), and blog and forum entries either deriding it or questioning it. There was nothing on Consumer Reports except blog entries questioning it.

Until proven otherwise, snake oil. Hopefully harmless snake oil. The burden of proof is for those who make the claims, not for us doubters. I did read one blog entry that claimed it a cure to male pattern baldness. I am sure it works on EDS, as well.

Its is probably one of those things that Esso back in the 50's paid 200 million for the patents, put hits on 3 scientist, and sunk all the available supplies in a weighted container in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Its down there with a 200 mpg carburetor, and that car in Japan that you put water in for fuel. Its only exhaust product is water, so you can hook the exhaust up to the intake, put in a gallon of water (highly purified of course) and drive forever.

Ok, I am done having fun. I would be cautious about adding any additive to your fuel. Even if it does work, can you be sure it is not in some way harmful to your engine or catalytic converter? I am a huge doubter in all such things. Valid additives would be added by the oil companies, they won't lose any money, they just charge you more.

Regarding your crappy mileage. Isn't Willow Grove a big Sunoco territory? I get 2 MPG less with Sunoco, than other brands. I am told they have one of the highest levels of ethanol. Don't know that for a fact, but I do know that I get lousier mileage with Sunoco.

I was curious enough about Ethos to try it. I also get between 19 & 20 mpg's in combined city and highway driving.

I just started the test. I also read on an email FROM Ethos that the emissions sensor on many cars must be reset for the stuff to work, which involves disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes so the engine computer resets to the new additive settings rather than the emissions settings of the untreated gas. I did this last night. They then suggest running three tanks of gas through the motor. I drive so much this will happen quickly.

As their promotional offer was $57 and included $100 worth of free gas coupons, it seemed like it was worth the test for the hell of it.

I am at motionpicturedude@hotmail.com if you would like me to tell you the results of my test.

I am very skeptical about this kind of claim for better mileage. I wouldn't put anything like this in my fuel system. You might end up spending more money later on with side effects on other parts of the interior combustion system due to usage. No thank you. By the way, welcome to the forum.
