We have a 2006 Honda Crv with 17000 miles on it. It seems that it has started sometimes when you park it and get out; that when you come back and try to start it the key won't turn unless you really rack the steering wheel about.( my wife isn,t strong enough to turn it far enough to release the lock). Has anyone else had this problem? Should this be covered by warrenty?
Thanks
ranken

It looks like you have a problem with either lockbolt or lock. Your car should be still under warranty - take it to a dealer. Those mechanisms are designed with a lot of safety interlocks so it will not lock your steering wheel when driving but I would still not want to take a chance. Your Honda should have 36 months and 36000 miles bumper to bumper - so that still should be in effect. Ig you ar passed that (ie bought it back in 2005) still take it to a dealer and asked to be fixed under goodwill warranty. I would imagine that they will cooperate - if it is some serious issue (or might be just some dirt) that could mean potential liability and massive recall. In my work I have seen some lockbolts and lockbolts housings breaking during post assembly testing (true - testing was done with forces exceeding several times normal operating force) due to design error which went unnoticed for couple of years.

This happened all the time on my Rav,especially after you pull into a spot .What I started to do was after I turned into the spot I would straighten the wheels because what happens is the wheels being turned are pressing up against the locking mechanism.I don't think it is a safety issue just a bother.Just a side note YOU did show your Wife about the shift lock release? It might be covered under warranty but I have not had this problem with my 06 (30 K)

Most of cars will have this "hard to unlock spots" - usually when front wheels are left turn. But it seems that ranken has problems in pretty much any position. Maybe I misunderstood. So far in my V I never have a need to move steering wheel to turn the key.

Maybe I misunderstood as ranken said his wife was not strong enough to move the wheel because what I was talking about requires you only need to move the wheel slightly to take the wheel pressure off the locking mechanism. You are right about this happening on most cars besides my Rav it also happened on my Daughters Echo but when she phoned me in a panic she was able to move the wheel enough to start the car.
