View Full Version : 30.9 MPG all city driving! Prius go sit down

Last night I managed to squeeze out a 30.9 mpg out of a 32 mile drive in all city driving. While this result is not typical and I only achieved this fuel economy when 2 conditions are met.

1. low temperature - about 68 deg last night 2. sparse traffic - with mostly green light the highest I got was 31.6 mpg but that quickly went down when I had to stop for a few red lights. Overall not bad of an economy for a suv if you ask me :) , my average mpg for last fill up was 21.3 over 246 miles driven (all city).

It is probably because your TPMS system warning light is on! No just joking.

I got 51.4 MPG over a 4.3 mile ride down hill after a fill up. As soon as I went up a couple of hills it returned to the low 20's.

While your immediate mileage seems impressive, I notice your overall figures are about like mine although I do almost no absolute city driving. Mine is exclusively suburban, lots of lights and fair traffic but not many start/stop jams, 22 to 24.

I wouldn't throw too many stones at the Prius. A woman at work has one and she gets 45 in the winter and 55 in summer, mostly the same suburban driving that I do.

I would rather have a civic HX than a prius anyday. EXCELENT mileage, and oh, did I mention it came out in what, '96-'00!

Opps you got me...the reduction of rotational mass by the lack of tpms sensor make my crv a gas sipper. :p
I do notice after the break-in period fuel economy went up by 1-2 mpg in all conditions. A proper engine break in is starting to pay off.

It's only showing you that cause you only drove 32 miles. A more accurate scenario would be to leave it like that for one full tank. That will show you a more accurate MPG... but also at the same time, I wouldn't take that MPG literally.

Avereaged 30.8 MPG on a 205 mile mile drive (mostly highway)

not bad for 1 AWD.

I usually get 25-26 mpg daily so the cheese wedge toyota prius can go sit down with numbers like that but I don't think that It can because it has no arms, legs, waist, or apposible thumbs so it can try to sit down.

yes I know that my MPG differs greatly with the prius but my V looks much cooler than a prius no matter how hot or cold it is outside.

I love the mpg of the crv great for the amount of power the motor has, but when it comes to long drives i'll stick to my 94 civic that get 46 mpg on the highway.

I seldom see my mileage drop below 26 and would guess the average to be in the mid 27's. This is 90% in town. On the highway it is not uncommon to see it at 33 to 34 depending on the terrain.

What planet are you from? There are no AWD CR-V's.

I don't see how anyone here can compare the CRV to a Prius. You're obviously drinking some tainted KoolAid.

I've got a 2007 CRV and I'm sorely disappointed with the economy of this car on fuel. I wasn't expecting much, but certainly more than I'm getting (same averages as everyone else on this thread - low 20's or sub 20's).

My neighbor has a Prius and the MPG blows away anything this CRV can attempt to get.

Now don't get me wrong. I love the CRV, but it in no way should be held up as fuel efficient.

Welcome to the club! Yeah, I kind of agree with you a CR-V and Prius is a bit of an odd comparison! I got 116. 4 mpg on about three readings after leaving a gas station and steadilly driving down hill. By the time I got 2 miles on the car it was back to the low 20's! Great compared to an Escalade or Hummer, but I wouldn't be throwing stones at Prius! But hey this is a CR-V forum so if you want to believe far fetched notions--this is the place to do it!

Welcome to the club, I like your sense of reality!

Anybody who actually reads my first post entirely should be able to tell this is just a light hearted observation and not ment to be taken as a serious comparison. If you took it seriously...well the cool aid analogy comes in handy.

CRV is a SUV and for its capability doing low 20s city mid to high 20s high way is more than great when it comes to fuel economy. I don't suppose a prius can carry this, cost thousands less, looks way better and still carry passengers.

Also an update on my MPGs...after the break in period is over I switched to using 87 octane gas as recommanded by Honda (yes during break-in period I put in 91 don't ask me why I don't know I just felt like it) I am getting 18-19 mpg, during break-in I was getting 19-20 all city driving.

It seems like using 91 octane gas during break-in adds about 1 mpg to my car. Although I have not done any real tests to back this claim so take it with a grain of salt, plus I am driving the car harder after break-in so mileage tend to go down on the low side.

That and pretty much every civic since the late 80's. No contest.

uhhh...

...the sticker is a lie? I am considering it has a counterpart called fake-time AWD.

That is a 4 not an A

On a side note the cube in japan has e-AWD an electric motor drives the rear wheels. but it actually makes it a bit slower.

If someone buys a cube now that theyre importing them.... I don't know... I should hope not...

And it's definitly an "A" for All wheel drive, as in real time all wheel drive.

I've never heard of real time 4 wheel drive, it would just be called four wheel drive.

Honda calls it RT4WD not RTAWD

http://automobiles.honda.com/cr-v/features.aspx?Feature=4wd

By all definition it is 4WD and is not AWD.

Allthough my V is FWD:D

it is true, its four wheel drive, not all wheel drive.

I thought the whole point of 4WD is that is engaged all the time, AWD and 4X4 means engaged sometimes.

I think it's just the opposite of what you said, think about a Subaru.

Hmm... true... ya know what , all 3 terms mean that 4 wheels drive... why can't they be called literally, Cr-v should be called "sometimes 4wd"

Hey guys - there a new member, sorry I forgot his name,
and he's saying he took off the rear wheel drive shaft
and now his gas mileage runs greater above 17 mpg.
he has 08 ex-l awd. Now he claims his awd now 2wd.
Any comment on this serj?

You got them backwards. 4WD is sometimes and AWD is all the time. Thats why the acuras have SHAWD

I wouldn't do that I think that it will mess with the hydros in the rear clutch transfer case thing. If you catch my drift

I thought he said NOW he gets 17mpg, which is what he said, no way you get 17mpg better. he lost mileage doing that somehow... you should average at least 20 in a Cr-v, and year.

I'm going to find a rear end with a full diff sometimes this year. My dad has agreed to help me and has come up with plans on how to do it, and we may even spin the engine laterally and come up with different transmissions... we'll see.
