I didnt have much choice but to tow our normally non-travelling pop up, but I had work to do on it which I could not do up north. Dry weight is 1600, and I had no idea what it might be with all the tanks empty and with the current options like hot water, furnace and shower.
So I weighed camper before towing any distance...1930 lbs, with only 170lbs on the tongue. (recall empty LP, and only 1 tank)
At slow speeds, even up to 55, the CR-V did great. The load was very well balenced and low first gear really helps get things rolling fast.
But at high speed, things were not so good. The CR-V was out of OD the whole trip, and was searching a lot between two gears. Yet RPM only changed from 4k to 4300k at 70mph. Any more than 70, and I was pushing air, wasting gas, and going nowhere.
Towing two ATV’s at 1800lbs total weight, I do not recall the CR-V working this hard. And running with the A/C off surprisingly made no difference at all.
65-68mph was a little more comfortable, but I still had to keep the OD off or the CR-V was always shifting. Problem uphill was that it did not have a gear to get into the real HP around 5-6k, it was stuck at 4k and 4300rpm and would not or could not drop to a lower gear at speed.
MPG (155 miles) with A/C on, green power wheel on roof & camper = 14
MPG (167 miles) with A/C on & camper only = 15
For those that still think the CR-V can tow 3500lbs with the 2” hitch option, I think you’re 100% nuts. And if your all for it, try it first, snap some pics for us to see, AND THEN report the CR-V can do it with no problem.
