Ref. New to CR-V/OC (9-22-08)

Thank you for the welcome and the suggestions. I did look in the search section for answers but was not successful.

What brought me to looking was a recent problem with my 2003 CR-V. It has developed a ticking sound from the engine. The mechanic that looks after our CR-V has investigated it and indicates it is coming from the valves. Through the process of adjusting the valves he has found that the exhaust cam is showing signs of wear and recommends it be replaced soon. The intake cam is fine without any visible wear. The odd thing is that he believes the sound was / is coming from the intake cam and not the exhaust cam as revealed from the adjustment procedure.

I have made some telephone inquiries to a few dealers and they said it is not a usual occurrence. As for any recalls for exhaust cams or hidden warranties there are none.

I now turn to your pool of knowledge to ask you for any constructive comments and guidance.

Thank you for your help

Have noise go away?
I am also finding highly unlikely that cam is worn out - unless you have 250,000 on it. If you have any doubts you could either ask him to show you that or go and get second opinion - it should not be that expensive and might potentially save you a lot money in unnecessary repairs.

Thank you for your comments davos.
I asked one dealer about a second opinion and they said it would be a minimum of $110.00 just to look at it. I trust the mechanic that told me about the cam wear but Hondas are not his major experience background, if that makes a difference. The idea behind posting my problem on this site was to get some info. from people who know more about this than I do. Perhaps it is normal to have visibly different wear from one cam to another, I don’t know.

You just need a valve adjustment.

If your doing your maintenance, oil changes at least every 5k mi, and your mechanic says he see's cam wear, run away. He see's $$$$$$$. I have 198k on my V, no cam wear. I also have a 1990 Civic with 600k...YES 600k, no cam wear...just a little slow now.

BTW...I am a shop owner. I worked for Honda for 13 years before opening my own business. I am also a Honda tuning shop. I build NASA H1 cars, and I see Honda that kids beat the sh*t out of every day.

That's what I thought.
You could also try (or find some mechanically inclined friend to help you with it) remove valve cover and see it yourself.
BYW it seems that $110 is a bit high to just look at cams.

As a rule, I would agree with you and I'm sure you are quite right in a general sense. The issue in this thread and specific to "Timster", however is the model year of his V. He has a 2003 (Gen 2) V and if you read the referenced thread (link in post #4), you will see that there were other Vs and Es (K24A1/K24A4) that reported "cam wear" in that year. The thought is that there may have been a poorly heat treated batch of exhaust cams that got delivered to the public sometime during 2003 production. If "Timster's" mechanic spotted something that looked suspicious, he should be taken a little more seriously because of the model year involved.:)
