View Full Version : Hard to step down from Civic's mileage

I bought a 2008 Civic, then traded for a CR-V shortly after due to the suspension and discomfort issues with the Civic. However, I grew up during the last gas crisis of the late 70s, and I'm finding it hard to deal with the mileage difference. I knew the CR-V was rated less MPG of course. Also, I like being off the ground and my behind not being so beaten up after a trip. I feel like I'm being selfish by not saving fuel. But then my family is probably glad to have a bit more room, and it's not going to break my budget even if gas goes up again. Alas, I can't have it all! Anyone else dealing with the guilt of not being green?

:D As follow-up, I did my first fill-up yesterday and got 25.1 actual calculated mpg, and I do lots of city driving. I was very pleased that the computer is a bit under the actual mpg.

I think that the CR-V gets just as phenominal gas mileage when compared to the civic. the CR-V is bigger so it has more weight and more air resistance and the engine is 0.6 liters bigger than that of the lightweight arowdynamicly shaped CIVIC.:D:)

Couldn't care less about being green I would drive a V12 if gas was cheap the fact of the matter is the average person should be able to afford 25 MPG, most people complain about the price of gas then drive in a non fuel efficient manner, if you look at it your gas budget is 2-3 grand a year at most compare that to Europe and you feel the need to get a V8. I wouldn't drive some big cars i.e. Nissan Armada/Infiniti QX 56, Ford Expedition, or BMW X5/X6 because they are daft and stupid the Armada/56 is ugly it is an enormous turd its also bumpy and uncomfortable same goes for the excursion (quality stinks too), The X5 and X6 also suck you get the small seating capacity of a crossover, the fuel economy of an 8 seater and the interior doesn't impress me also the thing is ugly, OK they drive nice for an SUV but at that fuel economy I can have a slew of v8, and V10 cars which will blow my mind in the corners not to mention all of the Porsche mid 20 MPG roadsters. I would drive a Lexus LX, Range ROver and especially a Mercedes G wagen the whole thing about the green movement is you shouldn't feel guilted if someone can make fuel efficient technology great I am all for it but the world is not going to end because you have a car that gets 15 MPG it simple economics rising fuel prices is going to limit the amount of big fuel guzzlers on the road and so they do less damage; seriously we have been driving fuel inefficent cars for years my dad car in high school got 7 MPG highway I doubt 25 MPG will do anything. Sorry for going on a rant

I wouldn't mind a Austin Martin DB9 or a Ferari F430 or a 1953 Corvette roadster. Just some of the un fuel efficient cars that I would rather drive instead of the V.

My life time fuel consumption (10k miles otc) is 41 UK mpg = 34 US mpg, so I don't feel that guilty. There aren't many other cars the same size that get such good mpg. e.g. Nissan Xtrail or Landrover Freelander are worse.
On the other hand, I reckon a diesel Civic would deliver nearly 60 UK mpg the way I drive.

My other car is a Civic Hybrid, which gets about 50 UK mpg (of course gas is a bit cheaper than diesel). But we mostly drive the CR-V, the hybrid is just for occasional use.

i currently average around 11.4L/100 for city driving. for highway, the best i've done was around 7.5 to 8L/100kms.
honda canada shows 10.3L/100kms for city and 7.3L/100kms for highway for the 2wd. i'm not that far off from their figures so i'm quite happy.
but when i sit down and think about things, my crv is very close to my 99 sienna mileage.

when first got the crv, i was hurting coz i used to drive an 03 corolla with 5 speed. it gets around 7L/100kms city and around 5L/100kms highway. the 03 corolla was the most fuel efficient car i've owned.
i'm used to it now. :D

I made the change from a Civic as well. I went from a 93 Civic to an 08 CRV. Sometimes I wish I had the 38 mpg highway in the Civic back, but given he added comfort and safety features of the CRV I am happy with the 28-30 mpg Hwy my CRV is giving me. Even got 32 mpg on a all hwy trip to Cleveland and back.

Maybe there will be more options on the market later, but at this time, it seems we can't have the room and comfort plus the Civic/Corolla-like mileage. If there were a CR-V hybrid, it would probably cost $28K, and for that price difference, I can buy a lot of gas, even at $4/gal. I considered an Accord, but part of my decision involved wanting to be off the ground and have added visibility, which is only possible in a truck or SUV. The CR-V is the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid SUV out there in my price range, plus I like Hondas better. I can only buy what's on the market, and this is as good as it gets for what I wanted.

Your mileage will improve as the engine breaks in more as well! :)

Uhhhh, that's nice that you don't care about the environment or the future...

Just for the record, I am not overly green or an environmentalist but your attitude is just ignorant.
