The 5 speed auto in our 2005 CRV has a slight delay in shifting from 1st to 2nd gear under light acceleration. It does have a large ratio difference from 1st to 2nd - could this cause the slight delay? Under heavier acceleration it shifts faster - what is normal for this transmission?

How many miles does your CRV have on it? It could be that you need to drain & replace your transmission fluid. Check the very top post in this thread to find out how to do it. You might also want to check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgQKjCmSBzk&feature=related. Hope this helps.

Has 152,000kil - about 92,000 miles. Maybe get the dealer to a flush as well as fluid change? Also, I have a slight whine in 3rd gear - just barely noticeable. Bought it in late may this year as it looked it good shape for the mileage. Doing some internet searches, I have found some people with some whining from the transmission.( low mileage) I know they have problems had problems with the 5 speed auto transmission in the Odyssey. I hope that the CRV transmission is not trouble prone.

Consensus in the forum is against having machine flush done on transmissions. Check this thread: http://www.crvownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2324.

Since I posted, I have read the info on trans oil change. Honda has a good reason for not flushing - moving material that would normally not cause a problem - this could stick valves or cause other problems. The three drain and refill idea is good. Doing one drain and refill, changes 43% of the fluid - three times changes 81% of the fluid ( carefully calculated figuring how much new fluid would remain after each drain) I plan to do one drain now and one next spring. I was surprised that
there is no pan or filter for the transmission. The dealer wanted $85 to do the one drain oil change. Since it is so simple, I am doing it myself.

Since I did the first oil change, it appears most of the lag from !st to 2nd gear is gone. The oil I took out is fairly dirty so I will probably do a 2nd and third - at least a 2nd change. Clean oil must make everything respond smoothly. The oil has not only the transmission to lubricate but the differential and transfer gears. The oil did not have a burned smell - just dirty. I found another easy test to see if oil is burned ( oxidized) - put a few drops of oil on a paper towel - if drops get larger fairly quickly, the oil is ok - if burned the drops will stay the same size.

Did the 2nd oil change yesterday and the 1-2 shift is even better. Also noticed the transmission was quieter in reverse - straight cut gears make some noise but it is less noticeable.

Glad that things are working out now.:) For our CRV, I think that I'll just do the one transmission fluid change every 15,000 miles or so [probably every other oil change]. That way, when 60,000 rolls around, I'll have a bit of the newer stuff in it instead of hoping that the old dirty stuff doesn't create problems at the end of its cycle.
