I have a first gen crv and would like to change out the cabin filter as it has never been done. I have seen information on how to do this for the 2nd generation crv, however not for the first. Is there any major difference in how to change them out. I know the 2nd generation has 2 filters behind the glovebox and I believe the 1st generation has one filter.
Thanks in advance.

Big difference. Basically, you attack the 1st gen filter as if you are planning on removing the radio. Remove the glovebox and the plastic trim pieces and then you have to remove the dumb metal bar that is in the way. Remove the bolts from the right side and only loosen them on the left side so you can then swing the bar out of the way. The bar is needed for glovebox support.

Wow, definitely different than the 2nd gen. So just to clarify, the filter is still behind the glove compartment ? Without removing the glovebox, I can see what looks a filter that is positioned vertically(it also may some sort of firewall material as well). Is that it ? What sort of time are we talking about to get this thing replaced for an individual that is a semi-competent mechanically. Any gotcha's to watch out for ?
Thanks in advance.

Yep, same basic location and remove the glovebox door, but that darn metal support bar will be in your way. 45 minutes for a 1st timer. The gotcha's are cutting your hands on the metal supports as you try to get your hands into the areas to remove the bolts that hold the support bar. Have band-aids ready.

Thanks for the information 2RedV's. Now it's time to go and get a filter, which probably will cost a small fortune from Honda, and get the job done. Cheers.

Autozone, etc. carry them. Save a few bucks anyhow.

I was swapping the radio yesterday and thought I would go ahead and swap the cabin filter while I was at it. Reading what people have experienced I am still somewhat confused. Is the filter the vertically mounted white box? If you picture what it looks like when you lower the glove box, the box I am referring to is on the right. How do I access the filter to change it?
thanks,

That is not it. You have to open a vertical cover to the left of the white box. It is about an inch wide. You can only get the filter in with that metal bar removed though.

Hey guys. Hoping you can help me out. My girlfriend just purchased a used 1997 CRV with grey interior. Trying to be helpful, I went out and bought an In cabin airfilter. Easily removed the glovebox, to find the notorious bar that blocks access to the filter. I was able to remove the plastic piece on the right of the glovebox exposing the screws needed to remove the right side of the bar. I then tried to then pull back the plastic piece to the left of the glovebox, so I could loosen the left sides screws on the bar. (BIG mistake) The plastic being so brittle (piece of $hit) broke in half leaving this huge crack down the side of the dash. I feel horrible and need to maybe replace this part. It looks like it's part of the whole lower part of the dash though. What part is this, and what can I do? Sorry for the lengthy post. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure exactly what cracked but maybe you can pick it out in the attached illustrations and get the part number and price. Just click on the appropriate illustration number.

I have linked 2001 illustrations because part numbers and price information is no longer available for 1997s. I believe the parts are the same, however (Gen 1).
