Hi Folks - I am looking to buy a cr-v as my subaru forester is only getting me 18 to the gallon! I have seen some good deals on high mileage 100K and above diesel CR-v's. Having had hondas before and being thrilled with them i thought they looked excellent value despite the big miles. What should i look out for or should i get a petrol one at lower miles around the same price?

I have been blatting about in my sisters '06 civic diesel and been blown away by the performance and while the CR-v wont be as quick it looks a great compromise as i need a big car.

Thanks

Barnaby

Talking about diesels, one assumes you are from Europe, and I am guessing the UK, (or perhaps any where in the world except North America). Tell us your location. It may help key in what to watch out for.

Welcome to the club and good luck with your search!

I really hate how Honda gives Optitron gauges for that generation in different countries but non-optitron for North America (till the 3rd Gen came out) lol:(

High mileage CR-Vs are nothing to worry about. There are a handful of members on the other CR-V forum who have over 300,000 miles on their G1s. As for the diesels, I am sure they are just durable.

Optitron in a Honda??? That is a Toyota thing, isn't it?

I think you mean LED lit gauges.

Is it LED? Like what drivebyabuser posted on the V that he wants? I thought it was Optitron hehe..

Yes Optitron is a Toyota thing. Has been with Lexus since like 1993, starting on the LS400s and GS300s (1st Gen)

Useful link - but What Car reflex action is to advocate the petrol 2.0, saying the diesel will have to do "loads of miles before the costly diesel engine makes financial sense". For the CRV III, WC indicate the 2.2 diesel is the one to go for - all of 0.7 ppm more expensive over the 2.0. (estimated 3 years costs @ 12000 miles per year, and including resale value) So much for having to drive astronomical miles to counteract the premium for diesel:) They do at least acknowledge how much better the diesel is in hauling the vehicle around, which strikes me as a key factor. I have the 2.0 litre engine in my current Civic, where its fine, but doesn't really come to life below 4500 rpm. Then its rather frantic:)

My 2005 diesel CR-V has only 70K miles and the engine runs like it was new :)

I haven't read reports of higher mileage diesel CR-V's but seen some reports about high mileage diesel Accord with no major issue.
When there were issues, it looks like Honda was flexible enough to pay for the repair even though the car was out of warranty as this is their first 100% homemade diesel.

To be honest, I feel like the first diesel CR-V's (engine still made in Japan) are more reliable than the more recent ones (I've seen reports of Gen3 diesel CR-V's with clutch failure at 40K !).
