Recently our well-maintained '99 CRV developed a rubbing noise heard only when we turn left or right. The garage that maintains it said it is a problem in the viscous drive unit that is 'not serious'. We are concerned and wonder if anyone has any experience/guidance this regard. Thanks. Richard

The rear differential fluid is "worn out" and needs to be replaced. You didn't list the mileage on it but will assume that since you are asking the question it has never been changed on your CR-V. It should be done every 30,000 miles to prevent excessive wear on the clutch pack which will run you around $1200 to repair.

It is a very easy fluid to change oneself, but you MUST only use Honda's Dual Pump fluid. A dealer near me charges $40 for a single drain and fill. If it has been neglected for a long time, it may require back-to-back drain and fills to quiet it back down.

Post back if you are going to do it yourself and me or others will give you the scoop on how to do it.

edit for a typo...
