Spare Tire 2007

I'm new to this forum. My sis just got a 2008 CR-V EX model. I know the older models with the spare tire in the back is actaully a full size with the same rim/tire size. But when I looked at the spare on my sis' car, it was a narrower version and a black rim just as indicated by Greenzter's post.

on kbb website, it listed the car comes with a full-size spare so my question is, should it have came with a 17-in aluminum alloy spare tire.... thanks--b

It is a full size spare in that it is the same diameter. It just isn't the full width. No, it should not have come with another alloy wheel. (It is in your owner's manual)

From page 323 on the 07 manual:

Front Rear Tires: 225/65R17 102T

Spare: T155/90D17 101M


Not only is the wheel more narrow, but doing the math with aspect ratio, the wheel has a slightly smaller diameter and the difference in the diameter is made up with the sidewall of the tire. The wheel is inappropriate for anything other than a spare.

I have an o6 crv se loaded with honda options such as rear bumper sensors cargo cover front fog lights dimmable mirror with compass factory sub woffer and arm rest on drivers side seat. I think of what I have in my car and look at an 07 08 model and see a small wasted spare tire not like the o6 full size and alloy wheel. the only thing I see that the o7 08 has my 06 doesnt have is the nav system I have been thinking about selling my 06 with only 11,000 miles and mint condition then think about how cheap honda got with the spare tire issue and the top ex-l nav costs 28 plus thousand very cheap honda !!!!!!

I certainly wouldn't call the redesign from 2006 to 2007 a case of Honda going cheap. More likely Honda has incorporated two facts into their current design:

1. The compact spare is considerably lighter than a full-size one. Less weight means the allowance to allocate that weight elsewhere, like say a navigation system.

2. The tire-on-the-back look has really passed for the mini-ute/crossover crowd, especially those whose vehicle will likely never see any more off-road than the occasional dirt driveway.

I'm sure you enjoy your 2006, and I'm sure you can continue to enjoy it for years to come if the new design doesn't suit you. Hondas do tend to last quite a while. :)

Honda did the smart thing and did away with the WW2 army look with the external spare. That has to be the #1 reason for the record sales of the gen3.

However, they could have chosen to include a full size spare, or made it an option. Several competitors do so with their SUV's.

If i had my choice between a space saver spare...or losing cargo space to a full size spare....i will go with the space saver. I also agree that the spare hanging off the back was getting old.
The issue with the spare located on the rear tailgate was that in what should have been a minor minor accident when a CRV gets rear ended turns into an expensive repair in alot of cases.

Me too. However, a full sized spare fits into the cavities just fine on some SUV's. Honda chose to fill in the space with some cheap styrofoam blocks on the CR-V.
A Pilot will accept a full size. So will a Tucson will. An Escape will. Santa Fe comes with a full size. There are others.

Space savers are fine with me, but many feels better to have full sized spares.

the sparetire lasted two gen crv models so...... I guess it really didnt get old to fast ! also the spare tire believe it or not does absorb a good rear hit with minor and I repeat minor damage. not like a nissan murano a suv that doesnt

My info comes from 20 plus years in the automotive business....the last 19 with Honda taking body orders and working closely with my body shop manager.
