hi, my dad has a 99 crv and hes had a problem with it for the last couple of months, its been to the honda dealer and they cant find anything wrong with it.
Basically it starts up fine but after you pull away and then stop it will cut out, it does this until its up to temp, also if you listen to the exhaust it sounds a little spluttery.
thanks for any help

Stalling when cold and rough running are major symptoms of a burnt exhaust valve. When is the last time the valves were adjusted and how many miles are on the vehicle?

its got around 70k miles on the clock, i dont think the exhaust valve has ever been adjusted.
Is there a way to test the valve or check it?
Is it hard to get to?
thanks

Don't go on any long drives. Whether you wish to tackle it yourself or have it done for you, get it done ASAP. Neglect can cause a $2500+ repair bill for a new cylinder head. Ask to have the valves set to the "loose side of the specs".
A dealer near me charges about $100 to do it, but I do it myself. Takes me about an hour.

but if it was that wouldnt it be cutting out all the time and not just when the choke is on?

You don't have a choke.
Still, those are the classic symptoms of a 1st gen CR-V with exhaust valves that are too tight. Because of the known issue, it is not worth taking a chance. It may be the best $100 you spend. If you catch it early, before the valves actually start burning the valve seats and/or the valves themselves, you save yourself a lot of money.
These engines can easily turn 250k miles, IF the valves are kept adjusted.

Here's the deal. In Europe, and the rest of the world, consumers are more tolerant of vehicle maintenance items and this same engine is spec'd out for 30k mile valve adjustments. In the US, magazines like Consumer Reports publish estimates of the costs of ownership. Everyone wants a cheap to maintain car, hence, numbers like this and the rear differential maintenance get fudged upon. It's a numbers game. How many people will have a problem vs the costs of fixing under warranty?

It is fuel injected. The "choke" isn't like the old-fashioned style. It is mainly a series of functions of the computer that will check the air temperature, add extra fuel thru the injectors, change the engine timing and restrict air coming into the manifold.

Have a dealer replace the ignition switch. There was a recall on this. There is an issue on the contacts failing on these switches which will cause the problem that you are having. Hope this helps. Don
