Hi everyone. Here's a deal. Even though I understand that crv is not the best offroader, not even in top 10, not even top 50 but still. Want to proof some big muscled monsters (jeep, rover, etc) that CRV can get into a mud and get out of it (couse tired of my jeep/rover friends' giglin lol). I want to put my v in a really deep mud helping with some jeep and rover friends in Atsion ranger station on Rt 206 NJ, US.
I've never done that couse it's my first SUV so I need some tips.
1. What are the best tires for heavy offroading?
2. How to protect my V from sucking in water when going deep? And how deep can it go to be sure it won't suck in any water?
I now own CR-V 2008 4WD LX.
Sure i'll bring here some video as a proof that v can not only fight, but also win some rounds.
PS i'm a beggining offroader so please stay cool if I say anything stupid, i'm more like speedy driver, now want to try something new like offroading :)

Why in the world do you want to trash a 20 grand car? The CR-V is no boulder basher. Buy a 20 year jeep and beat the hell out of it. Keep the CR-V to light off road at the worst.

PSST...
The "new" 2007 to 2009 CR-Vs are based off of a Honda Civic with a bit higher ground clearance. They are NOT meant for off-roading or mudding. Period.
I know as I got stuck on December 23rd last year in clay-like mud in my CR-V and had to be winched out. Sadly, I didn't get any pictures of the incident but the CR-V is not designed to do the "rough stuff."

I know! I know! But I mentioned in the 1st post that i won't be alone. i'll be escorted by jeep/rover monsters so i'm not afraid to be cought in mud. I'll be pulled out if it would be needed. The only thing i'm afraid of is a deep water. Don't want to suck any in. So I just won't go in deep water couse no one could help me if the engine would be filled with water. But i'll try everything else ))
I just want to see what this car can do )) And I belive it can do much more then everyone thinks...
I've already tried top speed (120 mi/h) and now wonna offroad a bit with it. ))
Just need some tips (see 1st post) :)

I have some BFGoodrich primer touring tires and thet are rated for mud and snow although I havent used them in the snow or for off roading. look on tirerack to read their tire reviews though.
Actually i have heard that small light offroaders can work better than the bigger heavyier vehicles because they won't sink into the mud as much.
Hell i would go even though My V is a FWD

the thought of an 08 CR-V in deep mud makes me sick to my stomach. Just trade it in for a Jeep or don't do it. Your friends shouldn't make fun of a vehicle for not being able to do something it was not intended for in the first place. CR-V=car+utility+traction for snow and ground clearance for dirt roads.

I know I know! But I want it. And when I want something, I just do it. :D
Stupid? Maybe! But still...
Plus this experiment is like a motivation to work harder and make more money and buy a Jeep :p

Are you talking about the Pine Barrens? Oh my....Its scratch-city over there, tons of scrub pine brush to scratch the sides of your CR-V. Oh and plenty of sandy/silty mud puddles that will bury you up to your chest. Dude, do not do this. Ride with one of your friends first and you'll see what Im talking about. Keep the CRV for snowy drives and not for offroading.

Are you serious your crv is worth far more then your buddys jeep.Ive owned jeep before there a novalty at best. There fun to beat on but not what Id want to be making signifacant payements on.We have a 99 crv with a 1 1/2" lift thats great in the snow,as well as we just ordered a 1" lift for our 2008. I wouldnt take our 08 off road persay. We will be puting 235/75/17 on it after the lift is done. Id say if you want to get a jeep you need a pay cut if anything.

Ok I never took my V for a heavy off-road HOWEVER for the last year I've taken it upstate NY for fishing, skiing etc and NEVER got stuck in heavy snow, water, forest mud or anywhere I took it. It's far from such heavy duty offroaders like Jeep or Nissan but it does its job very well.

That's awesome wanting to throw your CRV into that stuff. Just about every Jeep here in Colorado runs BF Goodrich All-Terrains. I can't wait until my tires are bad so I can put some on. They look cool, work great, and aren't loud. I had a 99 Jeep Cherokee, just a 2" lift, the All Terrains and a bunch of other stuff.
The biggest problem with getting through mud is clearance. Once you're in deep enough where the bottom of the vehicle starts rubbing, it's like pulling another car behind you through the mud.
A major problem with the CRV is that you can't lock the rear differential and there's no 4x4 low gear. So, you have got to keep it moving because once you lose momentum the CRV has no torque to get you out.
Jeeps are extremely capable, and you don't realize why until you just barely get one unstuck. My Jeep was a piece of garbage money pit - the older designs had the most complicated front ends, and basically everything in the front end has to be replaced at 100k. JUNK!!! But, it would get me into and out of places I'd never try in another vehicle.
I would install the All Terrains without hesitation, and start slow with the mud to explore the capabilities of the V. There's nothing more fun than just barely getting yourself out of a sticky situation. I know I can't wait until the snow starts to fall!

I think the V is a very capable car.I took mine of onto the beach the other day with pretty soft sand and I did awesome.Got stuck once but the real time 4wd kicked in and I got out.
I think that it might get stuck in the mud and you might have problems. But since you have your friends to get you out if you get stuck id say go for it.Besides, youll never know if you dont try.Go and have a look on youtube, theres some very interesting ofroad vids from V's.
Im gona do a 90mile beach soon perhaps, and some other offroading.
Id say just get some good offraod tyres or all terain tyres if you have a lot of ashphelt to cover. Some wooden planks perhaps and a shovel.O and a spare rope if the towing rope breaks ;-)
enjoy

Everyone who owns a CR-V knows it's not a hummer, and you can't hang with a true 4 x 4, but that shouldn't stop you from trying a little off road adventure. Bring a "recovery/tow strap" with you... you'll need it. There are loops on the front of you're V. I think they are actually cargo securement tie downs for "roll on/roll off" transport ships from Japan. So I don't know how many pounds of force they can take. Probably a bit dangerous if you're really stuck, so I'd be cautious about any recovery efforts. Towing and recovery can be dangerous, especially if the strap, hook, or tie down fails.
As for the water depth, check out http://www.crvownersclub.com/forums /showthread.php?t=8821 there's a 2nd gen going through some pretty deep water. I wouldn't be too crazy, it is a AWD civic after all, but it's your car, use your best judgment. Don't be too proud turn around, or park it and hit the road in your friend jeep if the trail becomes impassable.

My CRV hangs right with my buddies 4wd Jeep Liberty with the exact same tires... so saying that the V "will not hang with real 4wd's" is a false statement. and ive deffnintly put my CRV through some hell on my buddies motocross track...

I'm not saying the CR-V isn't capable off road, I'll be the first to defend it. I'm just saying it has some limitations. I've driven both (AWD & 4x4) off road and in some bad conditions. You''re right the V can "hang" in some tough conditions.
You will for example, have trouble pushing through deep snow drifts compared to something like a Toyota Tundra; I can personally testify to that. So in that sense, it can't hang under those circumstances, that was my point.

Even Hummers can't hang with 4X4's, you ever seen one try to go off-road?:D
Hummer2's which are the current ones I see pretending to be off-road machines work as well as a minivan off-road, and tip over twice as much.

Go to 1:00 on the video and watch the axle snap while it tries to go over a rock. When they did the side by side comparison with a Rubicon for off-road reasons, the Hummer did the same thing... also in that vid, the red cherokee up the rock makes me cringe every time. Also, the other H2 at the end, that was just due to driver idiocy.

do a SFA swap and a hummer would be fairly capable but as they stand now they arent much good for anything. IFS in general is a no-no for OHV use

The H2s are top heavy from the DVD player, leather interior, and theater seating. :D . Yeah nothing like watching someone trash their $60k luxury land yacht. That shouldn't make me smile, but it does.
I've never seen an H2 off road, usually I just see them in the mall parking lot. I was almost killed by an H1 in college... literally had to dive out of the way of one while walking to class. Some frat boy thought he was mad max, I seriously think it was attempted murder. At least I know now if he had hit me I would have broke his feeble tie rod :D. Anyways, thanks for the entertaining link.

an H1 is very offroad capable, they sport the portal axles, same drive train as their US military counterpart and are expensive rigs. unless you are thinking of the H2, and the H3 which are mall crawlers.
