Yesterday, me and a few friends went to Assateague Island, the National Seashore of Maryland where ponies, 4x4 trucks, and fishermen roam. For a price, anyone with 4WD can drive on the beach and do pretty much whatever they please. For the most part everyone was really friendly, and even receptive of us and our little truck (I even got a Honda wave!).

The CR-V handled very well in the loose sand. Never got stuck once!

Now for the victory. As we were heading back, we came up on a group of people. One person was waving their flashlight back and forth at us, and then their truck's hazards started to flash. We stopped and asked if they needed help and they told us they were stuck and had been there for hours. I positioned the CR-V in such a way that my roof lights could light up their truck so we could see what we were doing. I couldn't believe what I saw. A Dodge Ram 2500 in a hole, up to it's bumper in sand. The guy pulled out a pair of straps and said "And here I thought Dodge put these hooks on so I could pull other out!". I asked him how exactly he got that way and he told me he was going along and hit his oil pan on a pile of sand. I turned the CR-V around, we hooked the straps to the safety chain holders on the Curt Hitch and I took out all the slack. I dropped the CR-V to 2nd and, together, we got the truck out. As I was about to leave the guy gave me $20 and said "Here, if your old enough, go out and buy yourself a few beers".

I feel so proud of my little CR-V.

More pictures and even a VIDEO of the CR-V pulling out the Ram are coming!

I haven't been down to Assateaque for a few years. Great place. Nice photos, and you get the CRV-OC good deed of the week award! So are you old enough to buy the beer?

Great photos and story, thanks for sharing.

That would have sucked, especially if not prepared for it. Good thing you and your heroic V were around.

One time my wife and I were Geocaching at dusk and got locked into a park. We tried calling the numbers listed on the information bulletin boards around the park, but we could get no signal out of the cell phones. So we drove around watching the signal bars and tried calling again, the phone rang once and then we lost signal. So I just figured what the hell, we'll pull the rear seats out of the minivan and store them under a picnic shelter & camp out in the back. We had snacks and water, the weather was nice, and who knows maybe something interesting would happen.

Not to be! "Try 911!" I didn't think they had 911 there, but I dialed 911 and they answered. I told them no emergency, but we were locked in the park. About 20 minutes later a guy showed up and let us out. I apologize profusely and got on my way. I fully expected a policeman with a citation.

I guess as long as you told them about it - you wouldn't call them if you were in the range doing something you weren't supposed to, so they probably were just inconvenienced to get ya out, but at least you got out. Sleeping in the back of a van is so uncomfortable, unless it's a conversion van I guess.

I love those headlight lights I keep telling myself that I should do it, but I want to get a roof basket and modify a light carrier thing so I can put four lights up top and do it right the first time instead of mounting the lights and then taking them down to mount the lights back up with the basket. Those are some really great pics.

Thats funny pulling out a 2500 Ram.

Actually they are unlucky cars. A friend of mine was driving his 1500 Ram and got sideswiped today by a Semi. The front of the truck and the right side are gone. I heard from his cousin that he is fine now though just minor injuries. My sisters saw him on the way home from school because they go to the same highschool and my sister and my friend were in the sane class before.

This place looks great! Being a resident of the great MD, I'm more interested in this place, especially since I have an annual park pass. Their website does seem to imply this place is expensive, though, with vehicle costs ranging from $70-$150. Whoa!

How is the driving out there? I'd hate to be the dodge ram and get stuck in the sand... More pics please!

$70 to drive in the sand? YOu guys ever heard of Death Valley? It's this huge place in California that's just filled with sand and dirt and you can drive there all you want. For free. Not the most pleasant experience, but hey. You get what you paid for.;)

I'm too far from death valley. This place here is closer and you'll be driving on a beach and not the desert. I think this is also part of the allure with the outer banks in NC. Camping on the beach, swimming, fishing, wild horses, driving, rescuing stuck suvs, etc.

I also seem to recall a member driving some pretty wicked sand dunes in the land down under (that thread is somewhere I think). That looked super fun!
