Strange temperature guage !!

Hi all
i have 98 crv, all is ok but thers is one niggling issue i have :

the temp guage displays normal all the time, i have changed the temp sensor,but still the the issue,

when started from cold,the displaystill reads normal( half way up )

when the wire from sensor is earthed to the engine,the displays reads hot(meaning the guage itself is ok)


is there another sensor i should be swapping out,? have done the correct one ?


so...............please help......its driving me crazy....

Did you buy the temp sender from Honda or is at aftermarket?

Does the gauge display "normal" when the key is OFF?

Do have the factory service manual to look at?

Does the gauge display "normal" when the key is OFF? NO IT DROPSTO THE BOTTOM
Do have the factory service manual to look at? YES, (in pdf format)BUT NOT MUCH JOY

should i be thinking about buying a honda sensor ? as the AF one isnt too good ?

You can ignore the PM I just sent you...

It sure would not hurt to try the real Honda sensor. I have come across bad aftermarket parts before and becuase of it, I try to stay original unless the part really is generic.

Have you ensured that the radiator and reservoir are both properly filled up?
Honda's use the temperature of the coolant to check and adjust many different things. Have you (after properly filling them) put the heater on and drove at high rpm's for a few minutes to rid yourself of air pockets/bubbles?

Oh, and NEVER use tap water in your Honda cooling system. It is a known killer.
Distilled water only unless of course, you are using the Honda pre-mix coolant.
