View Full Version : New Diesel - Clattering?

Hi all,

I'm the proud owner of a new 2.2 iCDTi ES model in the UK. The car is superb and I'm generally over the moon with it. :D

I've noticed immediately (first week of driving) that there is a noticeable clatter from the engine when accelerating (gently!) from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. It settles a little after warming up but never really goes away.

This isn't the first diesel that I've driven by any means, but it is the first that I've owned from brand new, so I thought I'd get the advice of others driving similar diesel models.

Is this perfectly normal, a consequence of being new, or just being a CR-V with a diesel engine? Other advice is obviously welcomed and thanks in advance.

ELP.

Is this a sound happening very briefly around 2000rpm that goes away if you accelerate more

Btw, the noise/sound of the 2.2 i-CTDI does vary quite significantly depending on the brand of the fuel.

My advice (after 70000 miles):
1) Shell "standard" diesel for the best fuel economy
2) Shell V-Power Diesel for more quietness and smoothness
3) BP Ultimate is also a good choice ... better than "standard diesel" and cheaper than V-Power diesel, at least here in Switzerland.

I'd say that this is somewhere around the 1,500-2,000 RPM mark and it is quite brief, no more than a few seconds. Accelerating a little does seem to make it disappear.

Thanks for the other advice on fuel too - when I get the choice I'll keep it in mind :)

There is another thread on this same observation, in fact it almost has the same title:

Welcome to the club and good luck with the new V.

I did have this as well and did ask my dealer about it at first service ... he said they couldn't find anything wrong. Since then, it looks like everybody else is noticing it so must be a "feature" of the engine.

Btw I haven't noticed it on my car for a while ... I don't know if it's down to mileage (I have more than 70k miles on the clock), fuel type or anything else

I too have a light clattering at part throttle at around 200rpm, almost like a petrol engine pinking sound, but it goes away quite quickly (few seconds).

I have never noticed any difference when changing fuels - from supermarket to high end diesels, I have never noticed any change in noise or consumption. I am highly suspicious of many of the claims made for the 'super-fuels'.

Aos, by the way, Switzerland has two small refineries, one owned by Tamoil (Libyans) the other Petroplus, so neither BP nor Shell have a refining presence. If you were BP, would you bring your fuels over 600km from their nearest refinery (S.France), or would you buy it from the guy next door? I can tell you that they and Shell, and Total, etc., most of the time, do the latter. So all they do is add some extra additives at the petrol station tank. Otherwise, it's the same stuff.

Thanks for all responses - I genuinely hadn't seen the other almost identical thread. So much for my searching... :(

I'll take the bit of a clattering as a feature and won't dwell on it because it just isn't bothering me that much. In fact, in so many other ways this is the best car/vehicle I've ever owned. :D

I have the advantage of knowing that many of these threads exist from kicking around here for a couple of years, and I have a hell of time finding them. The site's search engine is never going to put Google out of business!

hi
my crv has 800 miles and you get the rattle at 2000 rpm,
at the moment i have a hired crv from the dealers and it has 27000 miles and there is no rattle so it might go away when you do more miles ..

a wee note El_Presidente look out for oil leaking around the oil filler housing there is a problem with some late 09 diesel engines .

I don't know how they are doing but I believe that it goes a little bit beyond just adding additives.

There's a brand that claims that their diesel has up to 5% of biodiesel.

The Shell V-Power diesel sold in Switzerland does also include GTL ... I don't know how much though

All diesel in Europe contains up to 5% biodiesel, and has done for quite a long time now.

Shell's V Power diesel does NOT always contain GTL technology. I know because I asked them specifically for France, and they replied NO. So very unlikely you have it in Switzerland. Ask them. Shell Suisse will no doubt tell you. GTL comes from their Gas to Liquid plant in the Middle East, and is imported by cargo ship into the UK, and they only have limited amount sat the the moment. So the UK does have GTL diesel in the V Power, and this is the ONLY new, exciting technology in the 'super-diesels', as it greatly increases the cetane number.

Here's what I found:

Shell V-Power Diesel with GTL available in:

Austria, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Switzerland

Shell V-Power Diesel available in:

Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, Hungary

Excellent! Good work! So you got lucky and you get the GTL diesel in Switzerland. Clearly Shell do not have enough to go round, so some countries, like poor old France, miss out. Shell has a big refinery in Rotterdam, Holland, into which it can receive cargoes of GTL diesel. Small batches can be sent by pipeline to Geneva, or by train deeper into Switzerland. Then it will be blended with standard diesel, but I do not know at what ratio.

I think all the other 'super-diesels' are oversold, overpriced and overhyped, with very little in the way of proof or guarantees to back them up. The Shell GTL diesel on the other hand does genuinely have a substantially different make up, and the GTL part is super high cetane, which will improve engine smoothness, noise, and potentially, economy. If we had it here, I would certainly try it.

I'm currently running on BP Ultimate Diesel. For me, it is as good as Shell V-Power Diesel and it's "only" ~0.05€/liter more expensive than standard diesel.

The engine is really much smoother with this fuel ... I can accelerate gently under 1500rpm without having the impression that the engine is suffering (which isn't the case with std diesel).

I agree with you on the fact that you are not getting the payback for the extra cost with the improved fuel economy but, for me, the improved quietness and smoothness are worth that extra cost
