Hello everyone,

I am a new member of this forum and I'd like to begin my participation by asking a question.

I am a young male career professional who turned 24 about 2 months ago. I am in the market buying my first ever vehicle. Long story short, I test drove and really liked the CR-V, both the interior and the exterior (who wouldn't!). But some friends of mine told me the CR-V is totally a "chick car" and I should probably buy something more "manly" such as Ford Escape.

I am secure with my manhood but I'd like to ask you is the 2007 CR-V really a "chick car"? I'd like to get an idea what percentage of owners are young male?

Thanks!
J

Welcome to the site!

Yes and no is your answer. On-line, the vast majority of members on any forum are male. In the real world, I encounter more females driving V's than males. But, that takes into account all years from 1997 on. I have noticed a larger amount of 07 V drivers being male.

I have rented Escapes a number of times thru work. They are OK.
However, as a buyer, resale and reliability should be the big items you look at.
Compare 3-4 year old Escape resale with 3-4 year old CR-V resale.

You will have more power with an Escape, but pay more at the pump.

I would stay away from any Ford product. They have just announced a big recall of about 500,000 Ford Escapes, from various years, due to a fire hazard related to corrosion of part in the aniti-lock braking system. I would let Ford go through another product cylce before considering purchasing one of their vehicles due to quality concerns. It may be considered more "manly" by some, but how "manly" can a car be when the company that produces it has quality issues. It is a better investment to go with a vehicle that has a higher resale value in addition to a better history of staying on the road instead of vehicles produced by a manufacturer who's products are in the garage.

With the CRV, if being "manly" is a concern, I would pick a darker color over a lighter color. Also, roof racks, side stepping rail, and a rear spoiler are also options.

Why would you care what some people say? What do you say? It'll be your vehicle, not theirs. If you like it, buy it.

Like Red stated, resale value and your preferences should be the huge determining factors in which car you purchase. I am totally fine driving my new V and have never even thought of the idea of it being a chick car...

I'll tell you this though, coming from cars that demanded premium (or better) octanes, I am relieved at the Vs economy and thrilled at being able to use 97 again

Oh and my thoughts on Ford, I have a close friend that came from a generational Ford family. 2 warranty replaced Cobras later he states that he will never touch one of their cars again, not to mention the (lack of) customer service.

What is it about the CR-V that you like? That's what should lead you to buy it...not what other people might think.

Your car is what you make it. It doesn't matter if you rock a Ferrari or a pink Yugo. As long as you love the car and feel secure in it and with your purchase, then that's all that matters (or should matter). Then again, if you really care what other people think just by seeing your car, then buy something fast, expensive, and exotic in order to... compensate... for any other questions of masculinity :)

I am a woman and love my V......however my boyfriend drives it just as much as I do and doesn't feel that it is girly at all. He says it is sophisticated.....in my opinion - If I saw a man drive it I would think they are mature and successful....that quality matters not muscle....which is a trait I like.....just my little 2 cents

Hey, welcome to the cult--I mean club!

First: Listen to Red. Of all that I've encountered on this forum thus far, he really knows his stuff, especially about these cars!

Second: I'll be blunt. I'm 17. I'm a guy. I am set in my ways on cars already. I like sharp, sporty, well balanced cars. I'm a Rotary enthusiast. I'm all about how it handles. And I LOVE my mom's '05 CR-V. My only complaint is that it's an automatic, and not a manual, because that would be the icing on the cake with this car. Paddle shifters would be adequate, even. It's pretty fun to drive...more interesting than one might think. I took it up through the North GA Mountains and was very impressed with it's initial turn-in and easily probed handling limits. The understeer isn't too awful if you know what you're doing, but pretty much forget inducing much of anything resembling oversteer unless you try, try again.
Power is pretty good. I'll admit, I've had a few playful races from a light with other similar Cute-Utes, and beaten them. I've out-cornered cocky Ricers, who probably would have squeezed by me had they actually known what they were doing.
The transmission takes practice to manipulate into getting the gear you want. This is done by feathering the throttle in a botched heel-toe sort of dance while braking, before turning in. It takes practice, and you don't ALWAYS get what you want. If all else fails, I suppose you could tug on the gear selector...but that could end badly. So don't.

If you do buy an '07...I'd invest in some good coil-overs, if ride isn't of the utmost importance to you. And get yourself some good tires, slightly wider on the front, when the stock rubber wears away.

But, if performance means nothing to you...leaving the car as-is will still impress you.
It's not a 'chick car' unless you look at it that way.

I think the CR-V's are pretty!

No, seriously, I just traded in a quickly depreciating and gas guzzling Impala SS Limited Edition Indy for a baby blue CR-V for my wife to drive. I drove it home from the dealer and in spite of the color did not feel at all less of a man as a result. In fact, it never even occured to me before reading your post that it was anything other than a reliable, well built vehicle. I've driven every SUV under the sun in the last two months and the CR-V beat them all in terms of gas mileage, quality and resale value.

Given my color choice I'd have gone with the silver or red but the only thing that makes this vehicle a "chick car" is the glacier blue IMO. It will also boil down to whether or not you can handle the ribbing you might get from your narrow minded buddies, but take it from someone who used to care what other people thought: I'm spending the money, not them. I bought an Impala SS because my Chevy loving friend can be very persuasive. Where was he when the sunroof switch stopped working, the fog lens clouded up and filled with water, the coolant turned to a muddy brown color and the tires were junk all at 13,000 miles? Where was he when I was standing at the pump paying almost $4 a gallon for premium fuel? Finally, and the worst part, where was he when I discovered I was upside down on my trade-in after 3 years of payments and only 22,000 miles? He wouldn't even buy it for what I owed.

That is an antiquated way of thinking IMO: Ford = manly car, Honda = girly car. Those people are probably the same people who say real men don't cry and only drink cheap, domestic beer.
Think how those people will feel when their manly Ford breaks down & you have to give them a ride in your girly CR-V.:)
Who cares what others think anyway. I used to then realized that was a waste of my time.

I am female, and own an 07 V. In Sydney, although I have not seen THAT many on the road, of all the ones I have seen, only one was driven by a woman [and my husband usually drives mine].

Having said that, black and grey seem to be the most popular colours here in sydney [which I guess appeal more to males]. All the gold ones I have seen have been driven by people with white hair.

I'm sure Honda has extensive statistics of who has bought the CR-V and who will be using it the most in each household. The consumers have made their voice known by the huge increase in sales of the new CR-V.;)

Some cars are marketed more towards women than men... old examples:

ford probe v ford mustang

toyota celica v toyota supra

chevy cavalier v chevy camaro

colors have a lot to do with it... if a car's red color is more blue hued than yellow or orange hued, it's likely the companies demographic target is women.

with the CR-V, i believe the demographic is mid 20's professionals. (at least 70% of the people I see driving them around my area, appear to be my age, or within 10 years of my age)

I don't own my CR-V yet. I'm searching everywhere for Green Tea or Glacier Blue with Navi, but this exact stereotype came up at work when i mentioned getting a CR-V.

Granted I live in south TX and work with Law Enforcement. The question was posed to me, "Why don't you get a truck?" To which I replied, "Cause I'm not a 'bubba' and I don't need to compensate for the size of my ba..z!" That was the end of that conversation.

Seriously? come on!

Welcome to the club. Don't you just hate color decisions, the glacier blue is so pretty, but then again the green tea is sooooo cute! I went for the pearl black because it contrasted perfectly with my red shoes.

Just kidding. Welcome to the club and good luck with your purchase. Good reply to the stereotypical dudes!

Honestly, here in northern VA I see more men driving CR-Vs than women...

You shouldn't ever care what people think anyway, it is about what makes YOU happy.

I chose Taffeta White for my CR-V. It's very delicate and it soooo nicely matches the fluffy snow during the winter (Sorry Black Pearl, I liked your response so well , I had to copy).

The CR-V is a very capable machine and if it meets your requirements, then it's the right machine to buy. When your bad ass friends are on the side of the road and out of gas money, you can give them a ride.

Oh tsmithvt, such a lovely descripition for taffeta. It just brings to mind wedding dresses and flower girls. (Hold on, while I retch here).

Kidding aside, I have grown a healthy respect for the V in latest bout of crappy weather. And speaking of gas money, yesterday I pulled into a service station and the pump had $100.00 on it. My low fuel warning light was on and I left with $40.00 on the pump. Thats 60 bucks in my wallet that I can devote to some sissy pursuit. Oh but it is far more manly to put it in to a macho truck and make the mufflers roar.

I'm a chick, I have a white '08 EX-L with Navi. The first thing one of the guys at work said after I bought it was "nice ride."
My boyfriend would rather leave his manly F250 King Ranch in the drive way and take my V out on the weekend errand runs.

We have this ongoing debate as to whether the CR-V is a chick car. To help the reader decide I have included a number of photos that I think will prove beyond a doubt that the CR-V (third Gen at least) is truly a manly vehicle.

First Photo: Here is the Black Pearl in manly stance. Notice the rough environment, no Macy's parking lot here. Wait is that part of a playground set in the background?

Second Photo: Another shot of the macho Black Pearl. That is genuine manly filth on the side of that car. Look at those tires and wheels, very manly.

Third Photo: Now we go inside the Black Pearl. Note the map and the drop forged chrome vanadium combination wrench thrown carelessly on on the dirty floor. Would chick have a ratchet with a deepwell socket lying on the floor? Would a chick be dumb enough to throw her hat on the dirty floor? Only manly dudes do things like that.

Fourth Photo: The Black Pearl's Macho Dash. Note the GPS--I am real man I don't stop and ask for directions! Would a chick have a USS Pittsburgh hat on her dash? The USS Pittsburgh is a Los Angles class nuclear attack submarine. Very manly! Would a chick drive around with the TPMS light on? In the CD player is a recording of the 1963 NHRA Winter National AA Fuel Drag Competion. Would a chick listen to a solid 45 minutes of engines roaring and tires screaming? Hell no, they have no sense of refinement.

Fifth Photo: Oopsie. Oh dear how did that slip in there?

Sixth Photo: The CR-V a chick car? No way!
