I would like to if any of you have used a K&N air filter (see photo below) for your 3rd generation Honda CR-V?
If so, would recommend it?

We had a member, Connermt, put one in his 07 and wrote up some rather detailed results.

This guy worked for Honda at East Liberty. Unfortunately he stopped posting in October of 2007, another great loss to this forum in my opinion. Here is his K&N thread:

There was some discussion on K&N here:

I have one in my '02 crv. Works great. But don't expect great performance gains.

I also have a K&N cone filter on the AEM cold air intake on my 95 accord, and a drop in filter in my '98 F150.

I have a K&N in my Contour SVT and also had one in my 06' Tundra. I kept the original filter for my Tundra and put it back in when I gave up the truck. I always figured I would put the original one in if I had to take the truck in for warranty work/recall, etc. Just in case they wanted to give me any crap about it. I researched it before buying them and read all the stuff about how K&N will help you resolve any issues if the dealer tries to blame the filter for any problems. I had pretty much decided I would not put one in the CRV. Now I wonder if maybe I should get one. My driving is all highway, paved roads and no extreme conditions. As long as the change in airflow won't upset the sensors in these things. I think any wear from less filtration would, in my case, be very minimal and nothing I would ever notice while I owned it. Would anyone here remove the K&N before taking it in for service?

not a drop in, that would not make a difference

Actually, people get hassled about the purple K&N drop ins as well. The dealership will look for any excuse not to give you free service, obviously.

This reminds me of the Beetle, I pulled the air box off, and the filter had literally become a mound of torn cardboard and paper... and when I ook it out, it dissintigrated in my hands... VW would probably want you to have that filter too.:D We replaced it with a K&N, even though technicaly anything is better.

they arent worth what they sell for, if they would drop the price it would be more worth it, i just like that you can clean them instead of tossing it and buying a new one.

Dave does not endorse the punching of Honda techs in any way, shape or form, but does believe in being mean to jerks.

I wouldn't put one in - they let too much dirt through. I used one a couple of years in a american car - the oil consumption had been consistant but after 2 yrs with the K&N the oil consumption increased a lot - I threw the K&N away but the damage was done. When you hold up to a strong light, you can see easily see openings in them. I would never put one in our 2005 CRV as we have dust in the air a lot when dry and windy. I guess if you were in very clean area you shouldn't do damage to your engine. I guess the thing is you pay your money and make your choice.

The greatly increased consumption would indicate a lot of wear. You must be in a very dusty area for that to happen. How many miles did you put on in those two years?

I don't get why people feel the dealership is going to make a big deal over a drop in filter.

I have worked in dealerships for over 20 years and have never seen it happen.

I have seen customers denied warrant due to using a cold air intake and having the engine hydrolock.

Worrying about a dealer refusing warranty because of a drop in filter is just being paraniod.

My brother was denied it at a Chrystler dealership for dropping a K&N into his Gran Cherokee, they refused to replace the engine after it exploded, because that "could" have been the problem... now he has a Broken 2004 Cherokee on the side of his house he's still making payments for... that sucks. Maybe Honda doesn't care as much, if at all, but some companies might. Maybe it's just because Chrystler is in such a tight spot.

I have used K&N filters on several vehicles with good results on all of them. Without test equipment it is hard to judge the improvements, but there does seam to be a gain in performance and mileage. Also long term cost is lower because the filter element is washable, just use caution when reoiling. If possible let the filter set overnight to soak up any excess oil, running the vehicle too soon after oiling could cause the engine sensors to pick up oil residue.

There are no gain in performance with drop ins. The only thing good about them is, it will be your last filter you will buy.
If people are scared that your dealer warranty will be voilded, just put back your stock filter before going to the dealer.
