So far I've only done one mod for my V. I installed a compact, 139 decibel Italian air horn. I LOVE that people actually hear me in traffic, over their music and through their windows. I got this one from Griot's: http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?L1=L1_2500&L2=L2_2520&SKU=77839

The install was really easy... I just spliced the horn behind the driver's side of the front bumper. I can't remember if I cut (or wire tied or somethingorother) the wires to the original horn, but the speakers for that one are still up behind the bumper :)

Anyone else done this sort of mod yet? What do you think?

PS - even though this video is long, I found one with a clip of the sound... You can fast forward to about 1:30 and hear it. http://youtube.com/watch?v=8jnNPUiE37I

Yeah, I have but I went a whole different route, the air horns I have originally came from www.FMKustoms.com and a friend gave them to me. One of these days I will get a sound clip with the train horn.

I installed the PIAA Sports horn 400/500 mHz. quite easy and I'm not very handy. I did need to buy some connectors at Radio Shack and do some quick splicing and crimping, otherwise, basically bolt on replacement.

if you can find a copy of the instructions for installing CR-V fog lights, this will have a picture of how to remove the radiator cover and front bumper.

tools needed:
• flathead screwdriver
• Phillips head screwdriver
• 10mm wrench

if installing aftermarket horn:
• $7 wire crimping tool from Radio Shack which will allow wire cutting, stripping and crimping.
• connectors recommended by horn manufacturer.
• electrical tape

1. open hood.

2. remove battery bracket nut and move bracket arm.

3. use flathead screwdriver to remove 7 clips holding down radiator cover.

4. remove radiator cover and set aside.

5. to remove front bumper, remove two top clips, two bottom clips, two bottom 10mm bolts and two self-tapping screws (use Phillips head screwdriver) on the upper corners of the bumper (located in front wheel well).

6. front bumper should now come off freely. Place to the side.

7. horns should now be visible on each side.

8. for each horn, remove the one 10mm bolt holding it to the frame.

9. unhook connector.

10. gleefully discard horn.

11. attach new horn, either aftermarket or horn from a different honda.

12. if using an aftermarket horn, may need to splice on different connector.
a. the stock wire is 16 gauge, positive lead.
b. cut off old connector, strip wire down to copper, crimp on new connector.
c. if negative lead is then needed, bolt this to any metal-on-metal bolt that is visible for proper grounding and connect to horn.

14. do the same for the horn on the other side.

15. test horns.

16. replace bumper, making sure bumper goes over the wheel well trim and all bolt/clip holes line up all the way around before attaching any bolts, clips or screws.

17. screw in self-tapping screws to secure bumper.

18. replace bottom bolts.

19. replace top and bottom clips.

20. replace radiator cover.

21. replace radiator cover clips.

22. place battery bracket back in place and bolt down.

23. close hood.

24. use horn freely without the previous embarassment suffered with stock horn.

Welcome to the club! Very nice post on how to install these horns.

You may want to fill out the location and vehicle fields on your profile because most of us on the planet Earth can't hear sounds in the 400 / 500 mHZ range. OK, I am being a wise guy. I think you meant 400 / 500 HZ.

Please do fill out the vehicle and locations fields in your profile. (The profile info will go back and update in your previous posts.) You have given very detailed instructions, but we don't know for what vehicle and what country you are in. The V's can be different country to country.

Also HandA has Honda instructions for US gen 2 and gen 3 foglights. Goto the specific year range, exterior, then find the foglight listing and click on instructions. The instructions are Honda instructions in PDF format.

Thank you for your detailed instructions and again welcome to the club!

Well, do share!

The only ones I could find that didn't cost more than $50 were out of stock.

By the way, is this visible at all? Why would you need a red one?

These are very very very well known in the motorcycling community. You should run your own relay though. It'll keep the the light from dimming as much as it does in the video. Do a search for "stebel nautilus" and you may find links for cheaper group buys or site discounts. I think i bought my old one something like 12+shipping on a major group buy. Very well knowns, and honestly, a very inexpensive piece of mind for motorcyclists. Not sure as i think the horn on my g3 V is plenty loud, but i have yet to have to use it.

OK, Pinody... I got the horn, got my bumper all apart. Where the hell did you mount this sucker?

This thing is huge. I can't see anywhere logical to put this thing.

Did I get the wrong one maybe?

Here's the one I got:

Oh, and did you use the relay? Did you replace both horns? Or, are you still using one factory horn and one aftermarket horn?

These crazy loud horns would be amazing! however I wonder what it would do everytime I armed the factory alarm on the Gen 1.

I know I can set it to "Silent" mode, but I kinda like hearing it to confirm. Any chance that the alarm can be set to use the old wimpy horn, whereas the horn-horn could use the mongo-badassed loud horn? :)

Oh, and did you use the relay? Did you replace both horns? Or, are you still using one factory horn and one aftermarket horn?We tied it in with the stock horn for a really Loud twin Hi-Lo effect ... Sweeeeet! At first we tried an area behind the motor on the pass. side, but couldn't get it to face forward enough - so we added a bracket to an already drilled hole under the radiator cover - see pics here > http://www.crvownersclub.com/forums/t2382/#post18936 ... http://www.crvownersclub.com/forums/attachments/1230d1212448293-dscn0037.jpg ... http://www.crvownersclub.com/forums/attachments/1231d1212448529-dscn0035.jpg

Schenley,

I took out my factory horns since I had the bumper off. I can't remember exactly where I bolted the horn on to the frame, but it was behind the left side of the bumper. I want to say it's about where the fog light goes if one is installed. There are a few extra holes on the frame - just pick one and put it on where it won't get in the way :)

Thanks! Nice pics, by the way.

What about the relay?

Or, did you just take the stock wire to the positive of the new horn, and then a wire for negative to ground... (that's what I was gonna do...)

That sounds good too. Next time I get that #@% front bumper off, I'll have to decide where to put the horn.

At least I know all the tricks of taking the bumper off now. :D
