I keep hearing on this forum that Intakes loose torque and most computer mods just dump fuel. Are there any Engine upgrades that can be made to the 98 Honda CR-V that are inexpensive and worth while? Not looking to race, not looking to extreme off road. Just looking for a little more power and fuel economy for my commute

Swapping to a '99 intake and exhaust manifold will help, but much of the aftermarket stuff is geared towards high-end power increases; the kind of power that is produced at 5000 rpm's on up to redline. Since you don't really spend your commuting time in that range, you don't get any benefits from something that was designed for high rpm power gains.

I purposely stayed away from buying a 97/98 because after driving a 98 back-to-back with a 99 back when I was looking for a used V, the power difference was amazing. (The main changes made to the 99 to gain the extra 20hp was intake and exhaust manifolds and a higher compression ratio)

Is the 99 still part of the 1st Gen? Also, what kind of MPG does the 99 get? and what about those 5 speed transmissions, Is this the still the kind that can have that 6th gear added

Tell me more about the 99 and up first gen intake exhaust. Any Pics? Talking about the intake manifold or just the plentum? What all of the exhaust and this is about 20hp difference?

97-2001 are considered 1st gen. Some people call the 99-2001 the gen 1.5 because of the changes to the engine which gave it 20 more HP. I don't believe - and I am surely no tranny guy - that Honda had any other vehicles with 6 speeds using that same tranny design. I suppose one could always swap the current 5th gear for a higher (lower numerically) 5th gear. That would at least give you some of the benefits of the highway mpg. Honda made the manual tranny ones with about 15% lower top gearing than the auto tranny models.

Any where I can find some pics of a 97 or 98 compared to a 99? or 1.5 gen? I can't seem to find a search engine in this forum but maybe I am just new to it.

SEARCH button is 2 spots to the left of the LOGOUT button, upper right corner.

I have occasionally seen posts on forums where 97/98 owners have replaced the intake and exhaust manifolds with a 99-01 version but don't recall if it was a true bolt-on or if any mods had to be done at all to make it happen. Check out kingmotorsports.com for their modded 97 they did years ago. There was (is?) a nice write-up on the changes they did. The main things they did were porting the head, adding an intake and exhaust. They ended up with about the same amount of HP as a 99-2001 though after all the work.

97-98 has the B20B which is a low compression motor (8:8:1 or something like that) that is good for boosting where as the 99 CRV has the B20Z which is a high compression motor (10:2:1) and are good for supercharging or nitrous. I had a CRV-Tec B20z stock internals on a B16 head with only an upgraded valve train, no port work cams or tb or even intake mani, and it took a 100 shot direct port NX for about 8 months of abuse and ran 11.8'6's all day, when the motor got weak, strapped in some budget h beam eagle rods, knife edged the crank, and some cheap arias pistons with a CR of 10:5:1 on a 150 shot direct port tuned on a Hondata s300 the car ran 11.0's all day and all night long. Daily driven. So there is the difference, only in the compression where as bore and stroke are still the same in the B20b and B20z.

here are some vids of this set up in an eg hatch. This video shows the cyno abuse and thus resulting into a slipping clutch when it went to the track for the first time since the tune.
