View Full Version : Headlights off!
I often wonder why the lights stay on when removing the ignition key. So the buzzer beeps. Big deal. Still hear about people leaving the lights on and running the battery down.
I have a friend with a Subaru. No key - no head lights. Simple as that. (You can still turn your parking lights on.)
This Subaru has daytime running lights. They only come on when the engine is running and you shift to Drive. And even then they go off when pulling the parking brake. Now is that not logical? I believe on a Honda the DRL's will come on when the ignition is turned on. Even before the engine is started. Makes no sense to me. :)

I'll second this! hmmm bell chimes when your lights are on.. that means the circuit exists to add a relay, ... less than $1.00 to just shut the lights!
I have heard silly things that are most likely true..... example. Honda has Acura, now the MDX for example is 40K loaded. The pilot is 33K loaded. All the features are software suppressed, and (I'm guessing) about $100.00 in parts that could make the pilot have all the great features the MDX has, but then they would have a hard time justifying 40 plus for the MDX... This is just my opinion and I can only speak from what I have heard , read and feel
Anyone else here this?
Back to the lights... that a high dollar vehicle option, therefore they suppress it

The headlights on our 99 Acura TL turn off automatically after a minute or two when the key is removed. Allows the car lights to light up the surrounding area while you walk away.
Perhaps this controller could be adapted to the V if you really wanted that feature.

My daughter's Hyundai Accent's lights go off when the key comes out. This is one of the things I like least about my CRV.....after the fuel economy...

Although I really like the auto off after a minute 2 feature like Carbuff2 describes, I also like being in control of when the lights go off and on. Just because I remove the key doesn't mean I always want the lights to turn off.
Cars are doing too many things for us.

Hey 2Red. I agree with your last statement, but give me an example of why one would need to leave the headlights on without an ignition key. Makes no sense to me.
Isn't that like saying you may not always want the engine to go off just because you remove the key? Or have the brake lights stay on when you remove your foot from the brake? Or let someone be able to open the doors without a key? (And then turn the lights on? :D)

How about at a campground? Need some extra light, don't want to start the engine. There's probably hundreds of reasons to not have to have the key in the ignition in order to use the headlights. Still, for the pennies it would have cost Honda extra, having an option to keep the lights on for 1-2 minutes after turning off the car would be nice.

Yup. I was right. Makes no sense. :D
But I knew you'd come up with something. :) Good stuff.

I do disaster recovery planning. I can come up with a reason for anything. :D

I have to agree, the lights should turn off with the ignition. I have resorted to a clip on my key to remember! The chimes don't seem to register, and my last two vehicles turned off with the key.
The other annoyance is that the dashboard lights are on along with the drl's (and can't be dimmed). WHY? This makes it very difficult to remember to turn your headlights on when driving through the transition from day to night. You are easily fooled into thinking that your lights are on, especially in the city where there are streetlights. The biggest danger is that you are now running with no tail lamps, making you nearly invisible from behind!

The dashboard lights are on because you would not see the new dashboard without lights.

I understand that, but that would be the LCD portion. Its the red ring of light around the gauges that fakes me out! If I could dim the lights during the day like is possible at night, it would be a bit of a clue that you need to turn the lights on at dusk.
