View Full Version : did anything wrong little over fill engine oil???
hi experts,
i just changed my engine oil (DIY) last week In my CRV -2005 AWD-Auto.2.4 L
i follow the user manual says 4.4 L , so i pour all can which is 4.4L same time
i tried to figure out it was perfect , almost on MAX mark of deep stick but next day i measure after overnight my car was parked it was little above than MAX
level will it make any problem to engine ??
another thing i notice may be my doubt when i start my CRV (after Overnight parked ) RPM meter shows 1500 RPM up to 1 minute or less it becomes 1100 to 1000 between
i am at toronto and is winter is about start is this due to COLD ?? or little overfill of OIL ??
thanks in advance , help appriciated

The RPM issue I think is fine, happens in mine as well. As for the oil how far over max is a little? I think it will be fine oil is think and it probibly driped out of the engine compnents into the oil pan and thats where you got the little extra from.. Let some one else chime in here thats my opinions cant give you a 100% answer.

RPM are fine that is just the V warming up as it gets colder the RPM will remain higher for longer times. The oil depends on how much you overfilled,a little no problem a lot big problems.Remember you are talking about the MAX line on the stick.Whenever I change oil in the V,lawn mower, snowblower I always under fill and wait and hour or 2 and then check and fill unless I am absolutely positive that it requires x number of litres and it was completely drained.
hi,
thanks for replay...
during oil change first my V was overnight parked so all old oil was in pan from every space of engine than morning i open drain plug... leave it open for 30 minute or more so every drop was come out ... almost no dripping after wards... than as per usermanual 4.4 L , my CAN was perfect so i wasn't worried about it... it is aprox (7-10 MM or less than 1 CM) above than MAX level spot.
thanks again in advance

i believe 4.4L was the maximum oil you should put in it. so you should pour oil that is lower than that. to me, i pour approx. 4L first. then i check my oil stick. if i need to, i would pour more. i keep my oil level between the MAX and the MIN. after driving awhile, i check again and if it touches the MIN, i pour more. my brother pour too much on his Accord and it messed up the whole engine. so lesson learned. ;)
hi,
over all i got all information and understanding !!! Thanks you people
i drive a lot (highway)almost 85-95 KM a day) and useally i change my oil between (6000km to 7000KM) so during my next oil change i will not go above MAX. limits.
thanks all of you experts

I didn't read the above posts yet so sorry if i just repeat what is said. the high RPMs is just the cold start idle procedure, and over filling wont matter all that much, as long as you dont go WAY over the MAX.
hi,
what you people suggest ??
do i need to drain some fluid and level it down up to between MIN and MAX
as a standard fill ???
because i am also planning to put "fumoto Oil drain valve" if i found in canada or i will make small oil drain valve (DIY) at shop to replace drain plug to avoid chance of thread ripping of pan during oil change.
putting oil drain valve was i am thinking during next oil change but if overfill issue is serious i can do it during this weekend as i make/find oil drain valve!!
i made a mistake of overfill just because i did first time and i follow user manual written 4.4L ,
thanks in advance ..... help appriciated......

I'd be more concerned about the valve failing and engine damage from lack of oil. If you use a torque wrench, you should never have any issues with the threads on a steel oil pan. The threads on my motorcycles have always have much softer aluminum threads and I never had a problem.
I wouldn't worry about the overfill. Just remember for next time that your better being below the MAX level than above it.

For the amount you overfilled I wouldn't worry about it until next oil change unless it is going to bother you the whole time.

if the overfill bothers u that much, then open the drain plug a tiny bit and let it drip out.
if you fill the suggested 4.4L or whatever honda suggests, the dipstick level will show somewhere around the min/low mark i believe. i do not go by the 4.4L thing they suggest. i look at the dipstick and fill up the oil accordingly. when the level reaches the FULL mark, then i stop. this has been discussed many times whether to fill up the 4.4L or fill it up until the dipstick indicates FULL.
personally, i stop when i see the mark at FULL. when the mark is at MIN or LOW, that is not full (to me). FULL is when the mark is at FULL, otherwise... what is the use of having the FULL mark on the dipstick.
every car i own i use the dipstick to tell whether my oil is full or not. i dont go by what how much litres to put in - i look at the dipstick. i have also overfilled a few times and i just leave it.
