View Full Version : What is your must have's for going off-road?

Jwood70

What are the most important things you take when you drive off road? Lets keep the list short, say 5 things. If you post a specific product (say a Hi-lift jack) then post a picture of yours and stuff like that.

I'll start.
I always have the full size spare (everyone with a 1st or 2nd gen has one so, I wont post a picture.)
I know that it is an all season tire, and not made to handle mud and slop, but if I catch a flat, I can always swap the M/T up front from the back

The V8 is so over rated. I have seen 4/6cylenders out perform a ton of 8's. I would rather have a torquey 4 or inline 6 than the heavy V8

its usually due to the weight of the vehicle not the engine. i agree you do not need a v8 for wheeling, but it helps especially when somebody else gets stuck and you are the recovery vehicle

YEah you told me about that, and that's a formidable opponent... but the Ls1... well... needs no explanation especially in a car that weighs only 3500 lbs.

Water is a good thing to have, and a tarp too in case you want to camp when you're out, or if you need to change a wheel in the rain. Oh my, there is nothing more irratating than changing a wheel in the rain. Working on the engine I can handle because of the hood, but the wheel... ugh...

They finished that thing like 3 months ago. It is just that Muscle Car hasn't shot any new episodes lately and they have to rerun shows.

yeah i have seen and drove better but it just shows you what them little things can do

I agree. I mean I have seen Samurai's that would put it to shame, I have seen 6 jeeps tonight alone that would crawl circles around it.

But I have a special place in my heart for people that try to be different.

I didn't see the Hemi Cuda finished... grrr... I liked the episode of I think it was Trucks, where they went to Wyotec and took the front wheel drive displays and drove them around. They were civics with only a front seat and the whole back end was cut off and rolled on wheel barrow wheels. It was awesome.

Jwood70
11-24-2009, 09:28 PM
exactly, one day there will be a cr-v crawling. well once i get more money for a planned project i have anyways :D ;)

Oh, your not the only person with that plan. The only part that is going to be hard is that you will have to custom fab everything in the suspension system. Also with the CR-V being a uni-body vehicle, you have a lot more risks of the body twisting. This is the main reason that I doubt I will ever build a crawler V.

GTCB-chris
11-25-2009, 09:27 AM
doing some research i have found a vehicle (thats the mystery part ;) ) that has a wheelbase .4 inches away from the cr-v (first gen) so i will just take the frame suspension from that vehicle and slap in a v8 or 6 banger :D

Jwood70
11-25-2009, 09:45 AM
So, you are going to plan on cutting the floor out of the V, custom installing a new one to mount to the frame rails, then making sure that you can get the passenger cabin in place without too much shifting?

Also, slapping a v6/v8 isn't going to be easy with the limited hood space that you have. You might be able to fit a V6 in there, but much bigger and you will have to push back the fire wall and rearrange the interior.

I mean, it really is a cool idea, but I dont see the final product being worth the cost in time or money (or frustrations)

GTCB-chris
11-25-2009, 10:04 AM
oh it will strictly be a OHV i already figured id have to move the fire wall back, like in older full sized vans

Jwood70
11-25-2009, 10:45 AM
Well, let me know when you decide to start on this project. I will come and help some.

okay man i keep forgetting your close

come stop over at coastalcarolinaoffroad.com or wheelindixie.com im k5chris on both of em, both are pretty good resources for wheeling and rig tech.

once i get the money ill try to find a first gen with no motor or what ever i can find cheap and the the mystery vehicle :D

Jwood70
11-25-2009, 01:26 PM
Cool, I will check em out. Just dont let them flame me. Too many people want to flame me (and others) who have lifted or want to lift a V.

Do they have like trail maps and resources for legal places to wheel? That is being my hardest thing to deal with, not having places to wheel.

GTCB-chris

go to www.carolinabackwoods.com (http://www.carolinabackwoods.com) its in calabash ill meet ya one day in the k5. ill try to not let them flame ya, but i still get **** about my cr-v we just need somebody to show them wrong. Jwood70

Jwood70
11-25-2009, 06:51 PM
Im a ford guy through and through. I was looking at a decent one today. A '99 5spd v6 4x4. Its super base, so I wouldn't feel bad stripping it and then hammering it on some trails.

GTCB-chris
11-25-2009, 06:54 PM
does it have the 3.0?

Jwood70
11-25-2009, 07:08 PM
I think so, I didn't have time to check it all out. it was more of a drive by and walk around.

I dont have a ton of money, and would love to find something a little older and a reg cab. This wouldn't be my DD, I would keep the V for that. Maybe I can luck into something soon

It's actually rather clever, they managed to use the spark plugs, 1 per cylinder to fire each set, so you have a spark on intake, and one while it's decompressing.

Kinda like an extra push when it's halfway down to burn any extra fuel lingering around completely and fully. It makes for a good power boost, and a great mileage deal. It gets about 36-40mpg on a 4-banger. and it's 89hp, not 81:rolleyes:. It can get going rather fast actually, I was just messing around when I said 0-60 in 3 minutes, it's a lot quicker than that. :D It also barely weighs anything, has 220,000 miles on it, and runs like nothing I've ever seen before. When I drove it to Washington, it did the whole drive without complaining, started up immediately whenever it stopped, and never broke. Only issue is 1st gear is a little sticky and sometimes you have to put it in 1st with the car off.

It's a great little toy for the price, at a whopping $500. It's all camofladge colored now, forest style, and sprayed some bed liner in it, it looks pretty good, while still looking old and crappy. People supercharge and turbo the engine in it all the time. It's pretty good little motor, and I believe it was made by Mazda.

From Wiki:
"The truck received a facelift in 1989, which included flush composite headlamps, new front fenders, hood, and grille, along with some upgrades to the frame. Inside, there was a modern new dashboard and steering column. Rear-wheel antilock brakes were added, and a 21 US gal (79 L; 17 imp gal) fuel tank was now optional on extended-cab models.

The 2.0 L engine was discontinued, and the 2.3 L now had a distributor-less ignition system with two spark plugs per cylinder, giving it a 14 hp (10 kW) boost. The three-speed automatics were dropped, leaving only the A4LD. The new 160 hp (119 kW) 4.0 L Cologne V6 was added to the option list for all models in 1990. The 145 hp (108 kW) 3.0 L Vulcan V6 was introduced to replace the 2.9 L Cologne in rear-wheel drive trucks later in 1990. With the new engines, the only manual transmission available was the 5-speed M5OD-R1.

The Ranger GT was discontinued, although Ford did build a prototype for 1990 powered by a 3.0 L SHO V6."

This one brand new came with a 120hp rating, and it's got the standard 1,2,3,4 O/D. setup.

The C/K is the name for Chevrolet and GMC's full-size pickup truck line from 1960 until 1999. "C" denoted two-wheel drive while "K" denoted four-wheel drive. The C/K light-duty pickup truck was replaced with the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra in 1999;

I have been planning out a built for a trail rig. I have a few different ideas.
1st, I would love to have a DD that I could ride trails with, but right now, that wont happen.
2nd choice is to find a cheap battered 4x4 truck and build a weekend toy. This could happen.

We'll see. I have an uncle with an '84 yota truck. 4cyl 5spd, 4x4. I am wanting to talk to him about it. It would make a sweet trail truck.
