View Full Version : 1999 ex gauge cluster
Hello,
I just got a 1999 ex on Monday and I noticed that the drive light on the gauge cluster doesn't light up. Is this normal (don't think so, but ya never know),and if it isn't doesn't anyone know how to fix the problem?
Thanks in advance! :)

I hope it's just the light burnt out. The light doubles as a diagnostic aid. You must also ensure that you always have the car properly in D, not half-way towards N or 2. This is something you need to fix ASAP.
Since you just got your V, one of the easiest DIY maintenance items is the auto tranny drain and fill. NEVER flush a Honda tranny. The factory manual calls for doing 3 drain and fills in a row, with a 5-10 minute between each. You will need about 3 quarts of fluid for each cycle. There is no need to even jack up the car and all you need is a 3/8" ratchet - not even a socket. The ratchet end fits into the drain plug.
I think the light might have burned out. The guy that I bought the car from was a service writer for a honda dealership and always had the car serviced at the dealership.
I'm going to call him and ask when he last flushed the transmisson. I'm hoping it's just the light.
At first, I thought I wasn't engaged in the gear all the way, but after moving it around I realized that the bulb wasn't lighting up.
If it is the light how would I go about fixing it? Can I remove the cluster and replace the bulb?
Thanks a lot 2redv's. :)

Have him give you the entire service history. Tell him it's OK with you if he blacks out his name/address, you just want to keep good records on what has or has not been done.
I called him today and he said that he changed the tranny fluid every 30,000 miles. He changed it at 15,000 and the car is at 130,000ish right now, so it has a little while to go until the next change. I'll have to give him a call and ask him if he still has the records for the vehicle. I should have asked him when I got the car, but I had so much going on at the time at it slipped my mind.
He said that the bulb is burned out on the gauge though. Does anyone have a fix for this problem?
Thanks 2redv's for all of your help!

Here is an illustration of the "meter". Check out slhondaparts.com (on-line Honda dealer) for good parts diagrams. It isn't as tough as it looks.
Just make sure you disconnect the battery first!

I think this is an easy fix Dana, at least I know its easy to remove the cluster and change the other bulbs back there.
There are 2 phillips screws in the bezel, they are locate on the top(a short P2 phillips screwdriver is the best way to get to them although with enough patience and practice you can use a regular length one too). Then there are 6 Phillips screws in the cluster itself(1 in each corner and 2 on the very top that secure it to the dash). Then it just pulls out and you have to unhook the connectors on the top and back of the cluster to get it out.
Chris
Thanks Chris! That will be my project for next weekend! I've taken a cluster out before on an acura legend and it wasn't very hard, so I'm sure it won't be to hard!
Thanks for all the help Chris and 2redv's!

Sorry to Jump in but I was about to start a new post but it seems this is already part of the way there.
Just bought a 99 CR-V EX. It has 88000 on it and it is immaculate, I think I have been lucky with this one. The guy before me had the 90K service done at 87K. so I am fine with that, and I am not hearing any noise from the front end, so I believe the valves should be OK till the 105K service.
But my deal at the moment is that the OD light does not work - figuring a blown bulb, I forked out $6.50 for a new one and the service guy printed me that exact diagram. It was mentioned earlier that I should disconnect the battery prior to this.
Should I? Is there an easier way that pulling the whole cluster out?
Can I have more of a step by step please as I am nervous about doing this.
I guess mine is the number 1 between the two 23's.
Is it a separate bulb to the drive letters - as they are all fine?
Thanks all
Paul

I haven't had a chance to replace the bulb yet, but taking the cluster out is very simple and that's the only way to get to the bulb. Disconnecting the battery is a must. When I had my old Acura Legend I took the cluster out quite a few times and it was very easy.
I'm going to try and do it this coming weekend, but I'm not sure if I'll get the chance. If I do, I'll take pics and post a step-by-step of the removal and the bulb install.
I got really lucky when I got my V too. The guy I bought it from was a service writer for Honda and had the car maintenanced at the dealership.
I'll keep you posted on the cluster removal. I've been procrastnating due to the weather here, it's super hot here.
Good luck!

Thanks,
I figure that if I pull the Battery I will loose the radio. I don't have the code anywhere and it seems a lot of extra work. What fun, just for a little light.
:)

I feel ya! Yeah, you're going to loose the code, but don't worry, you can call any honda dealer give them the VIN and they should be able to give you the code.
Dang light!
LOL! I just realized that I don't have my code either! We're in the same boat!

Look for the code on a sticker, in any of these places: inside the glove box, usually on the frame of the glove box door, on the inside of the interior fuse panel door/flap, inside the under-hood fuse and relay panel. Barring that, there are 2 other ways to get the code. The VIN - if the radio is original and has never been replaced by Honda or you or by the serial number on the radio. You may have to provide proof of ownership though.
Thanks 2redv's! I'll look for the code when my girlfriend gets home from work. She has the car today. I need to take our G35 to the dealer to have the headlights changed out.
