Instead of my usual moaning about the gargantuan door handles, I want to pay a compliment. Today brake assist saved the life of a cat, but it could have just as easily been a child. I was going 20 mph in our neigborhood and out of the corner of my eye I saw something dart in front of the car. More reaction than thought, I jammed on the brakes. Wow did that car stop, I have never experienced a stop like that. The cat ran out the other side.
Now for those of you who would say you should have hit the cat, I present two facts. 1. I like cats. 2. My wife loves cats, and if I hit one I would never be forgiven. Thanks again Honda.

Tell me, how does it work?
When you put lots of sudden pressure on the pedal, then some sensor registrates it as being an emergency and so the system apllies full brakes for you?
Is it provided on 2002-2004 models to?

A function of the VSA system, the CR-V can also recognize emergency braking situations and enhance braking assist when needed - a function called Brake Assist. This feature can be especially helpful when the driver is unable to press the brake strongly. When the driver uses the brakes in a panic stop fashion, a pressure sensor recognizes braking system operation beyond a specific value for pedal stroke and speed. Then, the VSA modulator pump assists braking pressure to increase braking force and shorten the braking distance.
This news release is about the 2007 CR-V. I don't have a clue if your model would have it or not, but it sounds like your vehicle would have to have VSA.
It worked very well.

At about 20 mph VSA has little or no input or relevance. Just like ABS at a certain low speed these features tend to be suspended because their interference could be more likely deteremental to the situational outcome. The cat was lucky but I keep 'beating' on my wife that no dawg-dang cat's life is worth a dent in your fender... I know I may as well preach to the fencepost infront of my house, but... :-II

Perhaps it was not Brake Assist, I really don't know, but I can tell you this--it had nothing to do with the luck of the cat, 9 lives notwithstanding. That vehicle came to a dead halt like I have never experienced before.
A dent in the fender would pale to my wife's potential rage over hitting a cat. The dent can be fixed.
