First of all, I bought it from a dealer with 114k miles, and the car is in prestine condition, so my guess is that it was cared for. I've never felt or heard such a smooth, quiet 4 cyl, especially at idle. It makes my 92 Accord soundlike a diesel, lol.

1) Yes, I am aware of the Honda valve adjustment intervals, and plan to check, although there is no indication of lash issues... this thing is seriously smooth and quiet. The question: what are the clearances for a '98 model?

2) The check engine light just came on. No changes in how the car runs, and in my experience, it's usually a loose gas cap, egr issue, or o2 sensor...

On most Jap cars, there is a way to pull codes via a jumper wire on a connector; anyone know how to do it on these? Before you ask, no there is not an Autozone convenient to me, and it's my wife's car, so there's no way she'll go anyway...

3) While the transmission shifts pretty smooth (for a Honda ), there's a barely detectable clunk, like there's some light driveline lash, noticable between 50-65 mph, especially evident with the cruise on while driving on a hilly road, or when slowing down from speed on a down-hill. Driving around town, it's not evident. I've been told that the gen1's are quirky this way, and that it's not an issue. Regardless, I bought 9 qts of Honda RTF to make sure it's not the fluid, as while it appears to have been maintained, most people, including lube shops, don't know to use Honda ATF.

4) While adjusting the valves, I'll check the condition of the Timing belt, see if it looks like it's been changed. Has anyone here changed theirs themselves? How involved is it? The belt on my Accord was a pain, and I don't have that kind of time anymore, but it looks like this one might be easier. Anyone know of a procedure online?

1. Clearances are listed ont he sticker under the hood or in the service manual. DO NOT EQUATE QUIET with having no valve issues! They do not get noisy as they tighten. They would be noisy if they loosened - which they don't.

2. - Yes, But I do not recall it off-hand. Maybe some one knows this by heart?

3. Sounds like the clunk you are hearing is the torque convertor locking up. My 99 is smooth and quiet. Excellent move to do a 3x drain and fill on the tranny fluid.

4. It is fairly involved, but someone with decent mechanical knowledge can do it. I would have negotiated $600 extra off the purchase price claiming it has to be done. But, I am that way... :) I had mine done when I bought it at just over 80k miles and am now at 139k miles.
