CRVster's post about trailer brakes got me wondering about the "curt" "receiver" he had mentioned.

I found it with a little perusing. Here's the info:

97-01 Class1&2
Part Number 11014

97-01 Class2.5
Part Number 12514 (no drill)

02-05 Class2.5
Part Number 12515 (no drill)

Using those part numbers I was then able to find the correct 2" class 2 model for my 99 CRV (the 12514). Not sure which picture is right, some show one, some the other, I've attached both below:

If anyone finds a better deal on a 2" no-drill receiver for a 99 CRV, please let me know!!!

I just installed the Curt hitch i ordered from E-trailer, i live in northern Ontario and shipping was 60 bucks, but since i really wanted the Curt with the 2" reciever and couldnt find it anywhere else i sprung for it, $119.00 US, beats the hell out of the $700.00 + hitch from the dealer ! install was very easy...bolted right up and didnt need to modify the exaust hangers either. Just grind the right rear bolt and muffler will not hit. also you might need to bend a little bit of sheet metal above the exaust tip (see picture) to allow clearance for the triangular shaped reinforcement on right side of hitch.

Updated part number for 02-06 Curt is 12535 with the center hook attachment added.

This is the hitch to buy, it also gives the highest ground clearance (does not protrude down as far as the drawtight class 1).

When I saw the pictures that Mickeybc posted, I really liked how the hitch looked on the back of the car. I had previously installed a factory hitch on my 06 CRV and the more I looked at it after seeing the Curt hitch, the more dissatisfied I became with how it looked. It looked almost suspended in space about 6 inches below the bumper. There was nothing functionally wrong, it just looked, well, sorta geeky!

So, I bought the Curt hitch from Etrailer.com and replaced the factory hitch. One word of warning about Etrailer.com however. Their packing materials are non-existent in the box with the hitch. One of the attachment "ears" was bent just enough from bouncing around during shipment that it would not line up with the mounting holes. After wrestling with it for about half an hour (I did not have a helper when I installed) and after "adjusting" its fit in a bench vice, everything lined up and installed just fine. I read a consumer review of Etrailer.com and found other purchasers complained about damaged hitches as well. Even so, I would probably buy from them again.

Mickeybc is right about grinding off the muffler bolts on the muffler side of the car. If you grind off the bolt down to the nut, the muffler will not hit them. And the install is quite a bit easier than the factory hitch which requires drilling and removal of interior panels. I had already drilled mounting holes for the factory hitch (two on each side) and found that one hole on each side actually lined up with holes predrilled in the Curt hitch. So, I drilled the hitch for the second factory hitch bolt on each side and used these mounting positions in addition to the "no drill" positions on the Curt hitch.

I did not find a need to bend any of the sheet metal above the exhaust pipe as my hitch fit without hitting it.

All in all, I am very happy with the Curt installation as it looks much better on the vehicle than the factory hitch and since its a 2" receiver, I can use some of the accessories I already have and use for my Tacoma and Odyssey.

Mickeybc, thanks for the pics a few months ago....

The lower right hitch, where the side plate wraps up over the muffler is the one you want. I have one on my 99V and love it. The installation only took about 30 minutes. The hardest part is popping teh rubber exhaust hanger (squirt it with WD40 before you try to put itback on!) off to let the muffler hang down a bit. A helper make it much easier too!!!!

The correct Curt 2.5 hitch for a gen 1 is a beast of a hitch compared to the VERY WIMPY stock one. If you tend to abuse a hitch and want a 2" receiver, the Curt is the way to go. I recently yanked a car out of a snowy ditch with a snatch-em strap tied to my Curt hitch. No way would I have done it with the factory one. It would have bent something.
If in doubt, stand on and jump up and down on a stock one. You just may bend the mounting areas. The Curt includes an extra attachment point that attaches to the center tow hook (tie down used during shipping).

U-Haul actually sells the Curt hitch with their sticker on it. etrailer.com has routine free shipping offers too and carries the nicely made correct harness for a very reasonable price.
