Sorry that this post might be a little long, but I feel like I have to share this entire story. My husband and I both recently got new vehicles (he got a Suburban) and we are on vacation at OBX (the Outer Banks of North Carolina, for those of you not familiar with the area.) Since they were both new to us, we were itching to drive them on the beach, and we were able to get up to Corolla's beach access (there are wild horses that roam that beach, and sometimes they're walking down the same beach you're driving down. Its breathtaking.) My husband took his big ole bus (Suburban) first. It rumbled its way down the beach, for as heavy as it is.

As we were exiting the beach to go and get my V, we saw a second gen 4WD pulled over on the side. We stopped to ask the owners how it drove on the beach, telling them we were going back to get mine to take it out. The woman that was there went into hysterics. She started flailing her arms around, yelling at us not to do it because it would "rip out your entire undercarriage!" We were a little surprised with her reaction, because we couldn't see anything wrong with her V, and because all the other times I've taken my V off road it has handled it like a champ. We decided to take my V out anyway (because we couldn't see anything wrong, and because they didn't seem like they knew didn't really have any experience driving on the beach). I was not surprised at all when my V didn't even bat an eye at the sand. It zipped up and down the shoreline without even slowing down. By the time that we got back off the beach the other V had already been towed, so I wasn't able to ask the crazy woman what she had done to mess her V up. I didn't really have an reservations about taking my V anywhere before, but I definetly confident in its abilities to take me anywhere that I want to go now. We are here for a few more days, and will be taking it out again, so I will get some pics and post them later. So, don't be afraid to take your V off the road and grass and onto the beach! ;)

The 2nd gen's have a part of the fuel evap system surrounded by a small "cage" of small diameter tubing that hangs kinda low on the driver's side rear, near the rear differential. If you are driving in deep sand, you could get stuck by that low-hanging area and then bend it up pretty good.

I beat the crap out of mine. I have some pretty nasty construction sites I inspect.

Only 2 times has it ever got stuck. And wouldn't if it had all terrain tires on.

On both occasions it was thick mud and no truck or other SUV would dare try to help me out. On both occasions we used a Caterpilar D8 to pull me out.

Once I had to pull out a 5 ton Lincoln Navigator that got stuck. Mind you the CR-V didn't do all the work. Just enough to help the Navigator get unstuck.

I pitty the fool that looks down on the V.

Greetings!

While I have used my CRV off road I haven't taken it over sand yet (Though i was tempted last year at Cape Cod N.R.A)

What tires did you use? Did you lower your tire pressure when you went over the sand? if so by how much?

I just used the stock tires. Although I want to get new tires, I just got my V about three weeks ago and I haven't had time to make many changes. Although my husband has some of those automatice tire deflators (he has a passion for off road vehicles and going off road, so they get a good amount of use), he forgot to bring them when we went to beach and it was an hour drive to go back and get them. So we went out with the regular tire pressure as well. Like I said, we didn't have any problems at all! It was a blast having it on the sand, and I would definetly recommend it (keeping in mind how tall the sand is and the generation of V you have, as some of the previous posts in this thread indicate that second gens have less clearance). Also, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to talk to someone who has driven in the sand before because its a different experience (luckily, my husband has a lot of experience driving in the sand, a perk of living so close to OBX, so I knew what to expect). But like I said, it was a blast, so I would definetly recommend it!

sorry, but driving down a sandy beach doesnt sound like anything that tests the wits of a compact suv like the cr-v, unless maybe you used 4WD in soft, deep sand vs. driving down the typical hard-packed sand that everyone else drives their sedans on...

i'm interested in finding out from folks if they've depended on their 2WD cr-v's for substantially, but reasonably rougher terrain trekking, & how they hold up if so
