Red face 1999 CR-V -- Drill firewall to install subwoofer amplifier

Hi,

I am new to this forum and glad you are all here! I just bought a 1999 CR-V and I am getting ready to install a subwoofer and amp. I need to connect the amp power to the battery, but I don't see any good spots for getting through the firewall.

Are there any good spots, or do I have to drill a hole? If so, where would you recommend drilling the hole? I might even need two holes for two amps, or maybe one big hole for both wires?

Also, is there a good place for a ground wire connection in the cargo area?

Thanks for any help you can offer, as I would like to do this job myself and not have to hire someone.

on the driver side of the firewall there will be a few rubber "bungs" that you can remove, i believe the one i used was where the clutch cable would of went threw if my V would have been manual.

I dont have any pictures, I thought I did I guess not. My car is at the shop so I cant take any real quick but my ground was attached inside the trunk there is a little hook bolted on. The power is run through the fire wall on the passenger side there is a little gromet that if you cut a little hole and then push the cable through and it will pop out below the glove box! Oh wait found some pictures!

Have some images to show you

I took three shots of the passenger and engine side of the firewall, near the battery, that I'd like to share.

I see one grommet-looking-thing that appears not to be in use (I have no idea what I'm getting into there) but in a place in the dashboard I don't know how to get to. Do I have to remove the guts of the dashboard to get to this (it has red arrows in the pictures)?

I see another tube going through the firewall that MIGHT correspond to a tube that MIGHT go to the air conditioner, but I don't know. This one has blue arrows in the pictures.

Any help would be appreciated.

If I can't use these, could I just tap a hole to the side of the blue-arrow-tube and put in a bushing? I'd really rather have the power on the passenger side, since I may add another amp under the passenger seat some time in the future.

I poked around and...

I felt around up above the tube coming in to what seems to the be air conditioning (or heat) and I think I found where the red grommet comes through. It seems to be about six inches directly above the blue grommet, and seems to be the perfect entry point.

Can anyone confirm this before I start poking through with my knife? I don't want to blow up my AC unit if I can help it.

Thanks!

Pops

Usually the clutch spots are open, if it's an auto. And it can be threaded through there, or just drill a new hole for it and MAKE SURE ITS GROMMETED! If the metal weras the wire down, it will be grounded to the body of the car and will slowly die over time. That was the battery issue I was having earlier and a friend suggested I check that. Sure enough, the grommet had moved and the wire had a small cut grounding it to the body. Fixed and now it's all better. I drilled a hole next to the brake cylinder on the right of it. Lots of open space there behind the dash.,

Turns out I have a manual transmission, so I can't go through the clutch grommet. If I am right, this grommet down below the battery (red arrow) is my best bet, as it's actually nowhere near as high as I thought it was in my picture of the area behind the glove compartment--it's actually much closer to the passenger's leg space and pretty easy to get to. Plus, it helps me keep the power over on the passenger's side where I want it. I'm just not sure...

I hope it will work out that way, but if not I appreciate the advice on going over to the driver's side. I see where I could maybe go through the existing hole for the throttle. I saw one other thing that might work, but either one is going to make me take the dash off, so I'd just as soon be on the passenger's side if possible.

Any other thoughts from anyone on that grommet in the picture?

Thanks for all of your advice so far, everyone!
