Advice needed....PLEASE !!!!

Bought a 2002 CR-V in September 07. Since then, the following has been repaired:

- MIL light on - sensor for emission replaced - MIL light off
- MIL light back on - told needed to replace cannister and wiring harness, Gas tank was removed for procedure. MIL light off.
- Cruise control failed after above repair. Cruise works for 45 minutes, then surges forward and increases RPM. Cruise dash light stays on - Cruise shuts off. Can reset cruise will only work for a few minutes then repeats above problem.
- Engine light back on - told purge joint was needed to be replaced to solve the problem. MIL light off after repair.
- Cruise control repaired with actuator - does not work any better than before repair.
- changed dealers - New dealer replaces cruise control module and discovers hole in gas tank from heat sheild rubbing ( heat shield was bent from the previous repair).
- Cruise still not working after changing both actuator and control module - scared to take it into dealer ( It has already cost a tidy sum to NOT get it repaired $$$$)

Can someone give us some kind of idea what to look for to repair cruise control ???? The cruise seems to work for less than 45 minutes with a/c on - Is this caused by a/c or temperature ????

HelpMeCRV ( will take offers on a slightly used CRV)

"Honda does read this forum and they do take their customers' satisfaction seriously."

The above is what is stated on the forum heading, yet I have had only the response you see above Which is completely typical of this company that "cares" !!!

Also, why is there so little communication and accountability between the Honda company and the dealerships. We have been to two dealership who have both spoken on the phone to the head tech's and mechanics and all it does is cost to replace parts that are working fine.

I sometimes wonder why I even try Even though Honda "takes my satisfaction seriously", I seriously doubt they have a solution or take me seriously. If they had, they would actually make even a small attempt at either replying to my e-mails or postings on forums like this one........As it stands, Toyota is starting to look better and better all the time.

I have no idea what to say - but if you have problems with quality of repair done by a dealer first thing would be to talk manager and if that does not help call regional office. I can not believe that it would take several attempts to repair either emission or CC. You stated that previous dealer removed the gas tank - so if they should notify you if it was damaged - have them pay for a new one, it apparently was damaged by them.
My friend had similar problems with Nissan Quest - her brake light were failing on pretty regular basis and for two years dealer could not find anything wrong - when she finally pushed hard enough they called Nissan engineering support and have it solved same day.
If dealer could not repair it they should call Honda and find out what is going on - not just keep replacing it piece by piece.
Good luck

davos;

Thanks for the reply - we have talked to the manager and the owner at the first dealership. The only thing that he would say is that the car was fixed..??? The second dealership has been in touch with Honda and as they are having difficulty pinning down the cause of the problem with CC. They won't make any guarantees, so we are stuck paying piece by piece. We ourselves have talked to Honda Customer Service - The only thing they will do is to promise to ship parts in a reasonable time frame ( we have waited up to 3 weeks for 1 part). Also have talked to service techs at Honda - They suggested we get our current dealer to test drive until the cruise cuts out ( this could take up to 45 minutes for it to fail). It has taken a couple weeks for the dealership to agree to spend this much time on this problem.

Honda seems to be excellent at warranty work, but the dealers seem to fail miserably at after warranty service.

Mechanical advice from ANYONE would be helpful and appreciated.

Try talking to Honda again - show them all receipts for repairs and nicely(!!!) asked them if they can help you a little bit with the problem. People tend to respond positively when approached with kindness and yelling at somebody usually gets one nowhere.
If they call dealer from corporate office and say "listen, there is this guy with a problem - let's see what can be done to help him" they will try to do eveything possible to take care of you.
And one more thing - if repair work fails insist not to be charge for it - if diagnostic was done improperly that's not your fault.
Also try to search Craig's List to see if anybody can recommend some good repair shop specializing in electrical and electronics. I know that there is a lot talented people working in independent shops.
Keep on tracking - I know it is annoying but at least car is drivable.

Honda doesn't care!

Here will go again. We took the car in for service at the second dealership Friday afternoon. They went over it and took it for a drive and got the cruise control to fail. They thought it could be the dash light's - if the bulbs are not the right size on the brake or dash - I guess it can cause the cruise to fail among other things - I found this information on the internet as well so it seemed plausible. The thing that irritates me is that they didn't take it for a drive afterwards. So it failed for us about 25 minutes after picking it up!
We have talked directly to Honda and their technicians and they have talked to this dealership. To be honest I like the people at the second dealership they are nice - we are nice to them. The biggest complaint that I have with this whole thing is time, time, and time. Nobody cares enough to take the time to listen or to test drive. We know how far their "test drives" are - I can read my odometer!!! (Do they think we are stupid - because they are treating us like we are) My second biggest complaint is that Honda can charge high prices for their used car based on reliability - and I haven't seen it. They took my money for a used cr-v and the features we paid for have not worked as advertised. How can they get away with this!!

When we told them today that Friday's repair did not work they said the cruise control wasn't important to lots of people. (So I guess lots of Honda drivers pay for cruise control and are not unhappy when it doesn't work)
Or they could take the cr-v for three or four days and if they find time they will look at. (I assume they will replace each piece until they find the one that is not working - IF they have some spare time in between oil changes or wherever the money is) Honestly, I should have kept my Ford!

"helpmeCRV" You didn't say if your V is a manual transmission or an automatic. If it's a manual, there is a possible (long shot) explanation for your cruise control problem.

The clutch pedal of a MANUAL transmission equipped V has two switches that detect full pedal depression and initial pedal depression. The former enables the engine starter relay and the latter disengages the cruise control. There have been a few reports of the second switch (cruise control) going intermittent and causing trouble.

A similar switch is located on your brake pedal (ATs and MTs) but there have been no reports (that I know of) of this one being a source of trouble. Since it combines both stop and cruise related functions, its failure would cause other problems too.

Giving Up

We are still waiting for parts from Honda. A few days after taking the car to the second dealership we talked to them yet again. Our choice was to bring the car in and leave it for 3 + days and they MIGHT drive and try different things (no replacement/courtesy car) or we could order the switch on the dash and try this. We decided to order the switch and replace it ourselves when it comes in. We have not heard from the dealership since. Why won't they even call us to tell us the part is in or if it is backordered (most of the other parts we have ordered have been back ordered - up to 2 months for the emission parts). I give up with Honda. We have spoke to a good mechanic who thinks it could be the transmission - going to a private repair shop - who already has told us that his diagnostic equipment may not be as good with a foreign vehicle. Honda wants you to repair at a Honda dealership - but has NO CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!! NO PARTS!!!! NO COURTESY!!! I refuse to sell this CRV because I will lose a lot of money - I guess that means my only recourse is to tell everyone I can what poor service Honda gives. Yes, the vehicles work well for the majority of the time but you are out of luck if you ever need parts or service for something. TRAIN YOUR MECHANICS! REMEMBER that all new vehicles will be used at some point - HONDA DEALERSHIPS still could make money on people who buy and repair used - WE MATTER !!
