Weak AC
Hello,
This is my 1st post here. We have a '97 CRV with an automatic transmission, 2.4 L engine, and it runs like a top. We live in NM and it's beginning to be AC season down here, and since we bought it in '04 the AC has always been weak in this vehicle. There is plenty of refrigerant (37psi) so that's not an issue, but the air flow through the interior vents seems very weak. Any ideas? Is there a air filter for the AC that might need replacing? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Paul |

Second off, the 1997 CR-V was equipped with the 2.0 L, B20B engine and you should check your valve adjustment if you have not done so in the last 30,000 miles. Some of these engines had a problem with valve seat wear which could lead to zero valve clearance. This, in turn, can result in burned valves which is a very expensive repair. The valve inspection interval in your maintenance schedule (owner's manual) is in error. 1997 Honda CR-V Specifications - Complete Specs & Data at InternetAutoGuide.com Now that has nothing to do with your current question but it might if you should ask other questions later. Gen 1 Vs did have a single cabin filter and there is a good chance that it desperately needs changing if you have never done so. Car Part Wholesale - Auto Parts and Accessories Catalog - 1997 Honda CR-V ACC Cabin Filter (one example) I have looked high and low for video instructions on how to change it but can only come up with instructions for Gen 2 Vs which are much easier to change. The filter is located behind the glove compartment and behind a removable steel bar which everyone complains about. Well I stopped by our local Honda dealer and picked up a cabin filter ($25) and got busy. It took just under an hour to do the replacement, it was a pain removing the horizontal bar but once I got by that the rest of the operation was a breeze. Thanks TSmith for posting up the pictorial guide.
The old filter was completely clogged with all kinds of leaves and dirt and the new filter gave me a brand new ventilation system. The AC is now able to keep the car cool. Thanks again!! |

I also replaced the filter and it does make a huge difference. I thought that the compressor was going out and that we were in for a huge repair bill. The link with the graphic earlier in the thread would not appear for me so here is another.
