To Those Who Have the Honda Roof Rack

Can you get a Thule hard-shell carrier that attaches to it? If so, can you direct me to a specific carrier that works?

Also, how much louder does it make your ride with or without the sunroof open?

I have an 08 CR-V.

I had a roof rack for my VW Golf, but it was REALLY nosy and cut down my MPG by 3-4, which really adds up.

Thanks.

Also,
Do you take off the rack when you won't be using it, or just keep it on permanently? It doesn't sound hard to install.

I got my OEM-identical rack from the same Canadian eBay seller that jeprox linked to in your other thread about roof racks, and I've been totally pleased with it. It took barely 30 minutes to install (and I'm all thumbs with stuff like that) and I don't think it causes anything worse than mild whistling noises at high speeds. I don't have a sunroof so I can't speak to the noise factor with that. I have had no difference in mpg either, and I've left it on the car continuously since I got the rack in December. I've had stuff strapped/bungeed to the rack and it works great.

That said, I don't really like the way the Thule FatMouth clamps (their universal mounting method) fit the rack. I have a very old Thule ski carrier that I put the clamps on so that it would work with my rack, and the clamps just aren't quite perfect--the ski carrier tends to lean backwards rather than stay vertical over the course of a long freeway trip. (I also don't like the rather iffy way the FatMouths "lock" to the rack, which I don't think is terribly secure if a thief is familiar with how they work.) I am thinking that I might replace the Thule setup with a Yakima ski carrier that has their own universal mounting system and see if it works better than Thule's. So perhaps you might want to be careful of a Thule hardbox if it mounts using their FatMouth clamps. JMHO.

Smile roof rack

i have a v 08 awd ex-l and i installed a oem roof rack. a really easy install, and i am not handy person at all. i purchased my v in may, installed the roof rack a couple weeks later, and i did not notice any change in the gas mileage. i'm still averaging approx. 25-26 mpg.

as far as the noise level with the sun roof open... i have not noticed any difference, but i only have driven with it open when in town driving. on the freeway i always close it up.

Thanks for the replies.

My main concern is if I buy the roof rack, I'll have to buy an additional part to get the Thule or Yakima shells to fit. Or should they just clamp on to the roof rack? Knowing if anyone has a specific carrier that works well would help me know what to purchase.

Also, do you think this is a legit website to purchase from?
