Hoping someone out there can give me a bit of advice... (I am based in UK)
Car developed intermittent starting problems a few weeks ago. On turning the key in the ignition a green flashing key, and an orange VSA triangle appear on the dashboard... Remove the key and try again, sometimes no warning lights and car will start, sometimes it takes multiple attempts at removing and reinserting the key, sometimes warning lights will not go off after many attempts...
We had a new key coded - still the same problem...
Car has been to local Honda dealer. They couldn't recreate fault and could not give a fault code.
We were told by them that it was probably the ECU - £1200 to replace, with no guarantee it would fix the problem. According to them, car is now worth £100 as trade in, as has potential ECU fault...
Does this sound like an ECU fault, as it only happens occasionally?
If I buy a tested ECU second hand, can it be reprogrammed to the car?

The Immobilizer System protects your vehicle from theft. A properly coded master or valet key must be used in the ignition switch for the engine to start. If an improperly coded key (or other device) is used, the engine’s fuel system is disabled.
When you turn the ignition switch to ON (II), the Immobilizer System indicator should come on for a few seconds, and then go out. If the indicator starts to blink, it means the system does not recognize the coding of the key. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), remove the key, reinsert it, and turn the switch to ON (II) again.
If the system repeatedly does not recognize the coding of your key, contact your Honda dealer.
The car will be going to a garage specialising in electrics to swap over the ecu, ignition unit and immobiliser as soon as we can find a complete kit from a breakers yard.
We have been in touch with our Honda dealer on multiple occasions, they are not really interested - they would rather we trade in for a newer one.
I wouldn't jump to it being the ECU first. There is a pickup ring that goes around the lock cylinder that reads the RF chip in the key. If that is flaking out, it would cause that problem. Or a bad connection on the wiring harness in the column.
Yet again another thread on this issue that just dies. People come on this forum in search of answers and rarely report back what happened or if they solved the problem.
Try looking on 'you tube' you will find more information on there than you will find anywhere else.Put in a search,Honda crv
what year and model plus fault and up they will come.Pick out those that sound like your fault even if not your car.On ebay
you can get an ECU on price and year if it does not say 30 return waranty don't buy.You won't get anywhere what you paid if you don't fix.On the key issue I bought a replacement key fob,when I swopped I didn't notice the little carbon block,this is where
Welcome to the forum! I would only replace the ECU as a last resort after all else has failed, as it is quite expensive. None of the modules are cheap. If you had a Honda factory service manual, you could learn much and maybe find your solution. Mine is over 3,200 pages and contains huge amounts of troubleshooting,testing, and other information to help diagnose these issues. I got mine off eBay, on disc, for chap, and it has easily paid for itself several times already. Please keep us updated on how this goes.
Any number of issues could be causing this, from a weak car battery, to a weak fob battery, to a bad fob, to an issue in the steering column, to almost any of the other components involved, or even a loose pin in a harness in the system.. I would suspect the ECU only if all else fails. I'd just about bet money it is not the problem.
I would buy a code reader on ebay,you can get one for under £10,it may not give you the answer,but will point
you in the right direction,I don't know where the VSA module is located,but think that it is located underneith the
car,looking at the age of the car it could be water ingress.I read an article about the reversing sensors on a Honda,the mechanic said he had never found a bad one that could not be cured by spraying with WD40 to drive the water out.I feel this could be the problem with your VSA does it depend on weather conditions.Good

I have a Haynes crv 02-06 manual in part of the 12 diags that make up the car wiring diag,It shows a pair of
open contacts part of a switch which closes when the key is inserted,this is part of the ingnition switch.After
Fifteen years could this be the cause of the intermittant fault that you have?
I own a Honda CRV 2012 diesel 2.2 the fuel relay is not activated the pump is not switch on.
The reverse inhibit selonoid prevent reverse gear with ignition on.
Works with ignition of.
Anybody had the same problem that can help me
Best if you start your own new thread and give as much details of the car and its fault as reading through old threads although interesting can sometimes be time wasting so best starting afresh.
