i have a 1999 in mint condition but the tranny is toast, i also have a 1998 in mint condition with a blown head gasket

i know the shift pattern is different but can i still swap the trans into the 99?

i could also engine swap the 98 but i like the 99 better

any help would go a long way

I can’t say for certain, but I think the transmissions are the same. The computer dictates the shifting. So unless you can find a definite difference in the two transmissions, the ‘98 should work in the ‘99.

The shifter operates the transmission mechanically and electronically. To swap the tranny, you'd need to switch the tranny, PCM, shifter, engine compartment wiring harness, dash wiring harness, and instrument cluster. It would be a lot of work.

I have a 1999, my brother has a 2001 and my friend has a 2000. All 3 of us originally had the AWD Trans, and my brother and I both had to remove our driveshaft and I ultimately swapped to a 2WD Trans due to the transfer case. I have found that the 1.5 Gen CRV had a poorly designed transfer cas that was prone to shredding gears, sending metal through the whole trans and in my case, pulling the driveshaft forward, grinding the flange, bending the u-joints, and (thankfully not in my case) ruining the rear diff. If you really want that awd, just be aware of the potential problems you may face when buying one/down the road after some wear and tear.

lol @ plot guy, Literally had to rebuild my tranny @ 140k cause of this lol. when 2nd tried to go into 3rd the rpms flew away haha! i needed a new torque convertor. and the u joint on the front end of tranny needed to be replaced. my rear diff whines when in reverse but i think thats normal. i replaced the fluid. and im on 40k miles on the new tranny so far so seems good! only cost 1k for repair.

I guess I just have good luck. Had about 220 on mine when I sold it. Original transmission.

Technically the transmission is the same, but the change in the shifter linkage caused minor changes and compatibility issues everywhere. The change from 7 shifter stops to 6 mean the shifter and transmission have a different amount of cable travel, so they have to match. The range position switch is also on the shift linkage, so it shares the changed linkage travel. There's also a wire from the range position to the PCM switch that is no longer present in 99+ because there's no D3 position, two new wires from the shifter to the PCM because of the O/D button, and the instrument cluster and wiring to it are different because of the chance is the AT indicators.

I looked up all this stuff before buying my car because I preferred the 97-98 shifting, but found it would be too much work to swap them if I got a 99.
