Finally got around to replacing the completely non-functional fold down center console. Issues: Poor usage of space below, cup holders that don't fit many cups/bottles. Basically, I found the center console (which I lived with as is for 10 years) as non-functional.

Here is my solution:
1) Remove Center Console
2) Attach Cupholder to Narrow Hard Cooler
3) Push Cooler In Between Seats

Outcome: 1) the two drink holders work for very small to very large cups/bottles since they are adjustable, 2) The cooler can be used to store food items or anything really, 3) It can easily be removed for cleaning interior of car and/or to take the cooler on the go.

Its so much better, I can't believe I waited so long.

NOTE: Although I have not painted the cooler, could obviously be painted to match interior. Also, I am using a strap to hold the cupholder to the cooler (a medium duty lashing strap I had), but considering a permanent glue/adhesive.

Just seeing this old post.

I've been reconfiguring my '05 for cross-country/interstate travel & car-camping; I've just about gotten over the 'novelty' of the flip-DOWN, center console, combination beverage holder/coin catch...

I'm contemplating modding it with add-on, heightened shelving trays and attachments--that will 'accordion' or fold/collapse with it...

Or, just removing it all together and mounting something else functional there--like how you've done. I'm currently storing my cooler/cold stores in the trunk, which means a 'trip' outside & around to the tailgate for refreshment.
