2010 Honda CRV Excessive Oil Consumption

Hi everyone,
We are the owners of a 2010 Honda CRV with 80,000 miles on it. Bought it used from the local Honda dealership about 3 years ago. Last week I noticed a buzzing/humming sound almost from underneath the car, the oil light blinking on and off and the car just not seeming right. Since I work in the city, hubby and I switched cars, so if I did indeed break down, I was not stranded in midtown. It went to the Honda dealership today, where it's been serviced since we bought it. They said the car had no oil at all (???). They did an entire oil change, and on the invoice, stated the car was in 'Round 1' of the oil consumption test.

I have read about the 2010 Hondas excessive oil consumption on a few different threads. It seems to be a systemic problem. On the invoice after the oil change, it was noted that we should return at 81,000 miles to check the oil, and that we should check the oil every time we put gas in the car. I outright laughed. That will never happen. We do plan on checking the oil, I just found it funny anyone would ever write that as a strategy for dealing with a problem.

Now, after reading everyone's experience, I worry about the pistons and of course, the catalytic converter too. We seem to out of the extended warranty that Honda granted. We are out of the 8 years, while we have not hit the 125,000 mile mark.

Any advice on what to do? I feel like I am stuck with a car that will eventually have many problems. Here I thought we were buying a great Honda CRV. We also have a 2013 Honda CRV which does not seem to have these problem.

Thanks.

Hi. I am going through this exact situation right now for our 2010 CR-V that has just 75k miles on it. I am completely disappointed as we love the car. Just got my first measurement and have to come back in 1000 miles. We discovered this when our non dealer mechanic discovered we were quite low on oil just a month or so after having it changed (not at all normal). We are hoping for the best.

How about this? Reword the statement to read - Failure to check the oil as specified may cost you $10,000.00. Is it still funny? Then CHECK THE OIL! I would check it every time you get in the car. Carry extra oil. Any time your oil light comes on you must shut the engine off immediately and not start it again until the oil is refilled.

This is a very serious situation, one that can quite easily completely destroy the engine. The damage can occur within just a couple of minutes. That engine can run without oil about as well as your body can function without blood.

Please keep us posted on how this is going for you
They did not ask me to check every time I got gas. Now I am thinking I should...
Have the dealer do an oil consumption test. If it uses more than a quart of oil in 1000 miles, they will replace the piston rings for free, as the 2010 is known to have defective rings that stick. They put out an extended warranty to 10 years or 100,000 miles because of it, but are lax in telling anyone about it. I had mine replaced, and now have normal consumption, and gas mileage is back to what it should be.

Are you sure about that extension? I was told 8 years, so I’m beyond that.

Did you ever get a resolution to your problem? I think I am having same problem with 2010 crv and only 50k miles. But seems I am after the 8 year extension.

My 2010 seems to be having the same issue and is past the 8 yr warranty extension. Does anyone know what the cost should be to repair out of warranty? And if it is worth it on a 10 yr old car? My wife loves the car but I don't want to throw good $ after bad.

A few thousand, probably. There are 99 steps in the procedure and it says 11.8 hours.
