Dear all,

Thanks for reading this thread. My 2011 CRV had developed some bubbling/bulged window door trim cover pillar posts.
See the photos.

Couple of questions here:

1. I know it was caused by UV, but what's really underneath of these plastic parts? Can these plastic door trim cover pillar posts be easily replaced? If so, what the Honda part# for these door trim cover pillar posts?

2. I know that there are some aftermarket "6 pieces Black Window Door Trim Cover Pillar Posts" that's on sale on eBay (cost about US$10 or so). If I buy them and want to put them on top of the current bulged door trim cover pillar posts, should I sand the existing ones to smooth them out first, before applying the new ones? Since the new pieces are very thin, my concern is that the new ones may not stick to the surface well if I don't sand the old ones. That said, I tried to sand the existing ones, and they don't seem to be easily smoothed down.

3. Are putting new window door trim cover pillar posts on top of the existing ones the best solution for this? What are some of the other alternatives to renew these 6 pieces of plastic door trim cover pillar posts?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for everyone's reply. I went to two auto body shops to get a quote and yes, indeed, those are RUST and not caused by UV. Since I live in San Francisco close to Ocean, and I parked my V outside on the street, that's why it developed those rust even though I really tried my best to take care of my V.. :(

Since those are rust, so I'm thinking of removing those rust first by removing those black tapes with a heat guy first, then use a grinder to sand it down and remove the rust (I don't want them to keep spreading), then prime it and just apply those eBay/Amazon cheap Black Window Door Trim Cover Pillar Posts thing and just call it a day. Just wondering if anyone had done that before and if so can you please share your experience (I'm a newbie DIYer). I'm especially interested to learn what's underneath of those black tapes and how the rust looks like on the door trims, etc. Thanks!

Here is an youtube video that I found for door pillar trim restore. I'm hoping that I don't have to do such an big job as to cover the entire car etc.

Actually, the OEM parts are just adhesive backed tape that stick to the metal door frame. I have never replaced them on your generation, maybe someone on the forum has. I would guess you would use a heat gun, plastic scraper and peel the old tape off. Clean up the remaining adhesive. Then apply the new tape trim.
@Traylaw : Thanks so much for your help! So for the bubbling, is it the adhesive backed tape that failed, or is it the metal door frame got rust? Thanks!

That plastic trim also wraps around under the plastic window belt trim pieces so to do a proper replacement job, those trims will all have to be unclipped and removed, from the door. There is a video on youtube where a guy shows how to unclip those window belts, without stripping out the entire door. I did it the hard way, years ago, not knowing any better at the time.
@sunrise : If you can still find that youtube video where a guy shows how to unclip those window belts, can you please share it with us? Many thanks!

Without removing the tape you can't be 100% sure. But most likely there is rust behind the tape, not unlike rust forming under paint causes the paint to bubble.
I remember reading in another thread that some people said that Honda may have missed a step or something that the B-Pillar and C-Pillar may not have been treated with anti-corrosion coating? Is that true? Is this bubbling (on B-Pillar and C-Pillar) a common problem with Gen 3 V, and if so, does Honda address this issue later on with Gen 4/5/6? Thanks!

So, I went to another body shop, which gave me a very detailed quote for $1,215. They quoted 10.9 hours of Body Labor, then 1.5 hours of Paint Labor, etc. Those 4 "Black out" tape's Honda Part# are:
67324SXSA01 (RT Black out tape)
67364SXSA01 (LT Black out tape)
67824SXSA01 (RT Black out tape)
67864SXSA01 ( LT Black out tape)

Wife is saying that it is just cosmetic, so suggested to just leave it alone. Another friend of mine who owns an auto body shop also thought that it may not worth the $$$ to repair it. But my concern is that if it is rust (probably 95% sure now), then it will continue to spread. We are planning to keep our V for a long time, so I'm just not sure if it's a good idea to just leave it alone.

Any thoughts? Is there a way that I can at least "stop" the spraying of the rust, by applying some sort of sealer (or wax?) on top of the bubbling "black out tapes?" Or can I just try to "cut out" the tape that's bubbling to expose the rusts, sand it down property to get rid of the rust, then primer coat, then apply the aftermarket window/door trim cover pillar posts and just call it a day? Thanks again!

Also, for such an area, is it better to use a "Rust Converter" or a "Rust Remover" to remove the rust? Thanks!

Ok I'm reporting back to the forum about what happened. And I'm not happy.

I filed an official complain to Honda America, and they created a case (case#: 13546418).

I explained to them that I'm not alone, a lot of people with 3rd gen V reported the rust issue on the B and C pillar door trim, even with careful maintenance.

I truly believe that Honda missed a step or something that the B/C-Pillar were not treated with anti-corrosion coating, which hopefully they corrected this with 4th and 5th gen of V (now instead of using a thin black tape, at least they are using a vinyl thicker panel on top of the B/C-Pillar). I'm just really disappointed with the body work of 3rd gen V. I think my next car will not be another Honda again.
