About 42,000 Civics equipped with the base 2.0-liter engine are being recalled to be inspected for piston damage. During assembly, the piston pin circlips may have been installed wrong or forgotten altogether. Vibration of the car can cause an unsecured pin to move out of place, resulting in a possible seised engine and engine block damage. If oil leaks from engine block, the risk of a fire is increase.
Honda issued a stop sale for all Civics equipped with the 2.0-liter engine at the beginning of February. 'This approach to withhold further sales until those vehicles can be inspected was taken with a focus on our customers,' said Honda spokesman Chris Martin.
Honda says it has received one report of an engine fire and another report of an injury as a result of this issue.
Notification of the recall will be mailed to customers beginning in late March 2016. Honda encourages owners to take their car to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification. For more information, affected customers can call (888) 234-2138.
