2017 CRV Touring AWD Cabin Heat and Engine Temperature Problems
Hello all. Wanted to share my experience with my problem. Before I start telling you about my problem, I just want to say that I'm sorry that I'm having this problem. I really do enjoy my CRV but after this, not so much.
My problem is really preventing me from enjoying my CRV.
My CRV's engine temp gauge only shows that it warms up when my cabin heat is off while my car is is parked. If I drive the car a bit, it will eventually warm up. However, when I sit in park again and leave my heat on, the engine temp guage goes all the way down to no bars and the car will start blowing cooler air instead of heat. Huge problem for me because I sit in my car while it's parked and running for a decent duration of time and I need to stay warm. Thankfully my heated seats works, but something wrong here.
Been going back and fourth to my dealer and they showed me a new 2019 CRV Touring, and it does the same thing. Dealer refuses to do anything for me, but I payed a lot of this car and i don't think I'm crazy asking to have some heat while I'm parked. I did ask them to demonstrate the NA CRV, and that car's heat worked fine.

It's a lease, but I did lease with intentions of buying it out for the residual value after my lease was up. Kills me right now to know I'm making lease payments for a car that I don't want to buy has a serious problem with it.
My suggestion of “where to proceed with this” would be to ask the dealership to plug in to the OBD-II port and provide you with their diagnostic data of engine temp and vent temp. They do not “all do this, it’s normal”. That’s dealership BS. Be sure to post back with those diagnostic numbers from the dealership......you’ll be the first to do so.
FWIW, I see 90F-100F vent temp when the temp gauge 1st displays (+/-130F coolant temp). Both numbers go up from there.
Fan speed 1-3, temp HI, recirculate, manual mode (compressor off).

What’s your fan speed? Are you on recirculating or fresh? If on fresh, try a lower fan speed. You should get hotter air.
I'll ask them to do this. Thanks for the input. Do want to mention the dealer told me to call Honda corp so I'll try that on Monday also.

I like to leave my temp settings on auto and I just adjust the heat. The morning can be cold here in New York so I have temp set to max heat. I believe with auto, you are on recirculate mode.What’s your fan speed? Are you on recirculating or fresh? If on fresh, try a lower fan speed. You should get hotter air.
Strange though engine temp on my dashboard goes down all the way to zero.

AUTO mode engages the compressor, which runs the radiator fans and opens those crazy grill shutters. Try MANUAL mode, lower fan speed, HI temp and recirculate until you have a chance to get back to the dealership.

When the dealer people told me that this is normal. I responded and asked "What if I was a security guard using my car all night long parked in a parking lot and I needed heat?", they said I'd freeze. And they are right in my CRV I would.
This is my first Honda, and my last Honda. I got a Honda because they are known for reliability (maybe weak transmissions sometimes) but this is just outrageous. I don't know how a car company can be selling hundreds of thousands of CRV's that do this.
Maybe I'll look at Toyota after this but I'm thinking these small little displacement engines with turbos are not too good. I was trying to do the reasonable thing with the CRV, it's a sensible, smart, car. I guess I could always go tried and true pushrod V8 in the Tahoe also.

after 2 winters to be freeze inside i bought yesterday new rav 4 2019. i sympathize a lot with the owner of crv never again honda with their **** service
After owning a GMC Canyon p/u with the 5.3L V8 (same V8 that's in the Tahoe) for 5 years and getting 12 mpg with my kind of driving, I said never again. The CRV 26-27 mpg in town gives me a big grin.
Any vehicle heater will likely not work well with a wacked t-stat and/or faulty HVAC.
Send that video to Honda and see how they explain it.

It's a very efficient 1.5l engine with low-viscosity oil and a CVT that is essentially in neutral when at a stop. It just doesn't take much gas to keep the engine turning at idle, and therefore it's not generating that much waste heat.
Had a 1.8T M/T Passat before this and also watched the engine temp drop at lights on cold days. I was very active on the Passat forum, and nobody ever thought anything of it. (It certainly wasn't an underdesigned heating system; it'd roast you alive once you got that engine actually moving the car at a good clip.)

I don’t drive much, and actually sit in a parked car a lot. That’s how I noticed the problem. I believe I have the same issue with OP.
I don't pay attention about it much until lately, especially after the "oil dilution" fix.
What I found out was what crv383 said in post #11.
With Auto, even I cranked up to 82 or max, no heat at all.
What I had to do (if I want something blowing
) was hit Climate button then manually select options.
I even tapped to turn off AC.

I called Honda Corp yesterday, and I got passed around around a bunch of times. The first person I spoke to was understanding to my situation and was saying to me that she sits in her car a lot too and can see how I may be bothered of what's happening.
My last stop of being transferred around brought me to Customer Relations. The person heard me out but she explained because the dealer said what I'm experiencing is 'normal' they can't do anything for me. I went on to explain the car is advertised to have heat. The rep asked me where did I see this, and I mentioned the webpage. She went on to say Honda dealers are independently owned and operated. Got a lot of running around. She asked me to hold on while she checked the owner's manual. At that point I asked to speak to someone higher up than she. I'm suppose to hear from someone tomorrow. Keep you guys posted.
