I have never leased a vehicle. I wonder from those who have would the dealer charge him for those services if they see the code lit up when he turns it in?
2017 EXL Question About Lease & Maintenence
Hello everyone, long time lurker, first time poster. Back in May 2017 we leased an EXL for my wife. I've been following the maintenance schedule but the latest maintenance minder warning code is B167 which is the usual oil change & tire rotation plus this time it now calls for replacing the brake fluid & differential fluid. The car has just under 20K miles currently. I've been around cars doing my own maintenance for a long time and I still admit that I don't know everything but I'm sorry, that seems insane at 20K miles. A friend of mine is a Volkswagen mechanic and he didn't even believe me that Honda was calling for those fluids to be replaced at 20K miles, especially the brake fluid.
I know there are Honda apologist who will just say do whatever Honda says. And I don't want to seem like I'm disgruntled and defiant that I won't get this done, I really just want to gather as much information as I can to make a decision. If I don't get those 2 fluids changed now and just do the usual oil change & tire rotation could there be an issue next year when we turn vehicle in at the end of the lease? This is the first time we've ever leased a vehicle so I'm not entirely sure how that works

Yes do the diff and brakes. The early diff flush is to get rid of the clutch and metal junk during break in. This junk can foul the electric hyd pump and valves within the differential. As for the brake system they need flushing at least every 3 year. Just about every manufacturer now recommends it. Bosch, the brake manufacturer also insists on it, and they don't make a penny on a brake flush. A lot of little valves and moving parts in the modern electric powered brake system. Since brake fluid absorbs water from the air (you don't have a closed system, it's vented to atmosphere) corrosion will occur over time.
Your VW guy shouldn't be surprised at the brake fluid change at all; VW also calls for brake fluid every 3 years (and in some VW's every two.)

2017 CRV, make sure you return it after 3 years. It's not worth buying with the certain engine damage. That being said, never do that service on a leased vehicle you'll replace it 3 years. rest the MM for the fluids except Oil and tire and say thank you. if you are not leasing from Honda you will pay a fee, a few bills it was new in 2019 of spring. they wil lnot ask, or check the MM when on the return of the lease . but you will sign some papers that you returned the car as you got it this is like our 5th lease. and I own one of the leased cars, and have I changed hte transmission or Brake fluid Ask me when I hit 200K in 20 more years. I am at 114K now.

Oh we definitely aren't buying it at the end. We have not been all that happy with this vehicle for a lot of reasons and I'm so glad we leased it instead of purchasing it. I'm sorry but I'm a bit confused by your post. Are you saying it would be okay if we didn't change the differential & brake fluids now? I have a an additional rather unrelated question about the oil in the CRV's. Do they use full synthetic? Because I notice our Maintenance minder warning recommends an oil change about every 6K to 7K miles. That seems kind of on the early end to me if it's full synthetic. Or are they using a synthetic blend?
Good move. These days, the dealer can look up all the maintenance on their computers and if they see maintenance not performed as required... they will ding you on the lease turn in. And if you do the maintenance yourself.. be sure you have proof accordingly... or again.. they can and will ding you on the lease turn in.To be honest I'm probably just going to do all the recommended service because it's just how I am. You might get away with skipping some maintenance, but I generally take the view that on a lease turn in... they are going to look for any little nit to hold back some of your lease deposit.
I have leased many cars over the years including at least 3 Hondas. I have never had any problems at the end of my leases in regard to my maintenance of the vehicle during it's tenure with me.
Who knows what the dealer uses. There are 0W-20 synth blends available, even if most retail 0W-20 is full-synth. The MM calling for a change "early" just means that's the decision it's made based on your driving style, environmental conditions, warm-up cycles, etc. Mine calls for it at about 8k; this is exactly why modern cars use an oil-life indicator instead of straight mileage; so they don't have everybody change their oil at the shorter end of the range.
just chiming in.. 100% do NOT do this since its a lease.. Ive never ever done any maintenance like this during a lease. Only Oil changes and Tire rotations. Ive been leasing cars since 1990.
