Did anyone else have the rear differential fail at under 40,000 miles?

Last Saturday I’m pulling out of a convenience store and I hear a big clunk, clunk from its differential. Then every time I would take off from a stop I would hear a clunk, clunk as my car jerked.

Took it back home and didn’t drive it until today to take it to the dealer.

The bad news is my car needs a new differential. The good news is it’s under warranty so no cost. The bad news is it is going to take some days to get the replacement.

Odd that a car with under 40k in miles has a blown differential but my car is AWD so has a wet clutch in it with two hydraulic pumps so, not just a simple differential.

Here’s a page of how the duel pump wet clutch differential works in my CRV in case anybody is curious.

Holman Honda gave me a loaner. So driving an HR-V for a few days until Honda gets a new differential.

This would have been a very expensive repair if not for the warranty. Makes me nervous that it fails again after its warranty expires

Wow, thats some bad luck.

Did your MM notify you of a transmission fluid change etc?

(Or have you had it done?)

Good that its being done under warranty - I think you may well be the first (on this site) to have suffered this. Please do let us know what Honda says is the cause because it could aid other Hybrid owners.

The car does not have a transmission so no transmission fluid change. Differential fluid change is at 120,000 miles but I'm reading that other people have advised to do it sooner. Seems a gear tooth broke off so not a fluid issue.

Seems a gear tooth broke off
Determining what caused this failure is key.

It could be a (supplier) manufacturing defect or something related to it. Still, very odd that this has happened....

This is what I found on the honda owners page for maintenance. first diff change at 12.5 and there after at 60k intervals. I am at 30k on my 2020 and have already done the first one.
SM
I Googled it and got 35k for its first fluid change. So I'm about 2k overdue. Oddly the manual just says to refer to the dash info center and it never mentioned servicing the differential. I always do whatever maintenance it tells me to do. But from what I've read not changing it in time causes the clutches in it to be noisy, not break a pinion gear. I will change the differential oil more often in the future as it is an easy DIY job.

Is the rear differential of the hybrid the same as in the regular model?

My question was meant for people who do know.
Good luck with that. The dealership here seems to be totally clueless about anything.

But the forum seems to have some knowledgeable posters and I'd to know myself.

My hybrid is one of the very first ones to make it to America. I had a six months wait for it. Before that, I had a 2016 Honda Accord hybrid. Its powertrain impressed me and was the main reason I wanted a crv hybrid.

I spent about six months researching the 2020 Honda CRV hybrid that was coming out while waiting for one.

What I learned was it used a modified version of the same powertrain that was in my Honda accord hybrid and was basically bolted to their all-wheel-drive CRV.

This may have changed with the newer models even though they look the same.

The 2020 differential in the non-hybrid CRV has a factor recall on it.

Even tho
"The car does not have a transmission so no transmission fluid change. "

Huh?
Google it.
Here's a video on it

Even though not changing the fluid as required was not the cause of this failure I'm going to be like more diligent in the future about changing it.

The dealer wants over $200 to do it plus ending up wasting at least half a day over there.

Watched a video on how to do it and I am a DIY kind of gal.
Just need a pump and a bottle of fluid. CRV sits so high I can get under it without using a jack.
Should take me less than 30 minutes to do.

First hybrid I have seen reported with an early life differential failure. But.. random failures.. are random.. and this is why modern vehicles ship with bumper to bumper warranties.

Yet another poster child example of the value of the modestly priced (if you shop for it online) HondaCare policy to cover your vehicle for any major repairs for 7/70-8/100 (depending on the policy you choose).

If you are still under factory warranty, you might want to consider snapping up a HondaCare policy while you still can. If you want to do this, they are less expensive at select Honda dealers that sell them online at steep discount.

My factory warranty is over a few thousand miles ago. But still, have the 60,000 mile powertrain warranty and the 100,000 mile or eight years battery warranty.

Never heard of a Honda brand extended warranty. I was sold one by the Honda dealer on my last car but it was through a third-party.

Maybe you have better warranty offers on your side of the Pound. I'm in America and the extended warranties are considered scams.

I got one on the Honda accord hybrid when I bought it. I put 145k in miles on that car so even the extended warranty had expired. The only time I used it was one of the LED running lights went out and it took two weeks of going back and forth to get them to agree to replace them. Then a few months later it was recalled by Honda so would have been fixed for free.

HondaCare extended warranty, no scam. Call Sean at Hyannis Honda. ~$1000 to double the length of your factory warranty.

Warranties IMO are a gamble you usually lose. This thread is really not about them, but it came up and you'll hear how cheap the Honda sponsored warranty (Honda Care) is on-line. Almost cheap enough to purchase just for the peace of mind. Then there's the problem if you were to consider it, which I'm guessing you're not. :) You live in FL, which is the only state it's against the law to purchase a warranty on-line. You would be stuck with the same warranty for about 2x the on-line cost at your dealer.

I guess the reason I never heard of it is it doesn't seem to be available in Florida where I live as Florida is not listed in the drop-down Menu.
