The 3rd grader in me can't help but laugh at your VIN number. :)

That aside, I'm glad you had a quick and painless outcome to your issue.
Yeah, that has been mentioned before... pretty funny.

@TerriZ I'm also glad that your V has been repaired with limited delay.

Hybrid does have a transmission. It is a single speed transmission (with fluid) just like the ones that are in the full electric vehicles. And the transmission also requires a fluid change. Ofcourse, it is like 100000 miles interval but there is a transmission.

Got my car back this morning. Asked the service tech if the differential is different in the hybrid and nonhybrid and he says exact same differential.

Would have cost $2800 to do out of warranty.

Mentioned that I was very surprised that they were able to do it so quickly with all the part shortages. He showed me a Honda Civic with 317 miles that has been there for over two months waiting for a circuit board. So I guess I'm very lucky to get it back so quickly.

Please clear up something for me. Was this repair done under the original warranty, or was it done because you purchased an extended warranty?

Her PT warranty covered it.

My factory warranty is over a few thousand miles ago. But still, have the 60,000 mile powertrain warranty and the 100,000 mile or eight years battery warranty.

Did anyone else have the rear differential fail at under 40,000 miles?

Last Saturday I’m pulling out of a convenience store and I hear a big clunk, clunk from its differential. Then every time I would take off from a stop I would hear a clunk, clunk as my car jerked.

Took it back home and didn’t drive it until today to take it to the dealer.

The bad news is my car needs a new differential. The good news is it’s under warranty so no cost. The bad news is it is going to take some days to get the replacement.

Odd that a car with under 40k in miles has a blown differential but my car is AWD so has a wet clutch in it with two hydraulic pumps so, not just a simple differential.

Here’s a page of how the duel pump wet clutch differential works in my CRV in case anybody is curious.

Holman Honda gave me a loaner. So driving an HR-V for a few days until Honda gets a new differential.

This would have been a very expensive repair if not for the warranty. Makes me nervous that it fails again after its warranty expires

I have 2015 crv awd. I change my rear diff. Every 50,000 miles. But be careful not to put bolt back on to tight it will strip threads. I have 245.000 miles and no problems.

Hi There,

I had the rear differential go out in my 2018 CRV (1.5T AWD) at 33,959 miles. My wife was driving and I was in the passenger seat going down the freeway at about 75-80 mph. There was a loud bang and the car lost power and we coasted to a stop.

I had the Honda Care to cover the tow and wish I had not purchased it. The tow companies did not want to work with them because they pay such a low amount and I needed to pay $100 cash out of pocket to get the tow completed. The customer service at the roadside assistance place was also absolutely abysmal, we sat on the road for an hour before calling back and they had lost track of our ticket. The tow company told me they had been calling around trying to find a cheaper rate.

When they pulled the car onto the flat bed one rear tire was trying to spin the opposite direction; this also happened when they had it up on the lift at the Honda dealer, they spun one tire forward and the other spun backwards.

I had the rear diff fluid changed at 20,628 miles at local Honda dealer based on the maintenance minder showing the code. Immediately after this I noticed a slight whine from the rear of the car when traveling at a constant speed, it would only whine when I was light on the gas, not when I was coasting. I had an independent mechanic double check they had put diff fluid back in after the change but it seemed ok. We attributed the whine to the Michelin Crossclimate SUV tires I had installed at the same time as the diff fluid change; they have an aggressive tread pattern.

After the rear diff was changed (covered by powertrain warranty) the whine is gone and has not returned. So it seems there must have been some contamination that entered the system when they changed the diff fluid. It still took almost a year and a half for the diff to fail from when it started whining.

Anyway, I am done with Honda dealer service department and just use reputable independent mechanic now. I do plan to have the diff fluid changed at my next oil change even though it will have been less than 10K since new diff. Then will change when maintenance minder says to and stay on that schedule.

Back when I had 2007 Honda Ridgeline it did not have maintenance minder and rear diff schedule was 1st change at 15K and then every 30K after that, for what it's worth.

If it does ever start to whine again when out of warranty I will trade it in right away because it would have cost almost $3K to fix.

I hope this helps,

Sorry, but your post @18 CRV Touring is nothing like the experience the OP has had - for a start, the OP has a Hybrid, your's isn't.

Perhaps you should start a new thread in the 5th Gen area.

In any case, the OP's had her car fixed so that concludes this thread so we dont get further off-topic posts.

OP - happy to re-open for you if you have new info you want to share. If so, drop me a PM :)
