After watching this little clever video, I have decided rather than continue to use my iPhone 6 as a navi/over bluetooth as a music player, I will use an ipad mini which I already own

Shopping List
1. Basic Double Din Kit (METRA 95-7802CH) $16 via best offer on ebay
2. $5 eBay hard case (to be chopped up)
3. second hand ipad mini (waiting on price from buddy)
4. 3.5mm for Audio
5. factory lightning cable for power
6. rattle can - duplicolor graphite, rattle can primer
7. basics: body filler, sand paper, painters tape

Notes: concept is simple; leave the factory radio in place and fab the fitfield mini-u on top of it using the aftermarket dash kit. I will also replace the hazard button with a red one while the dash is apart. So far my mental design calls for removal of the factory faceplate along with the volume knob, I do realize I could modify the factory face-plate but that would involve too much cutting. Not to mention it will be un-doable if I ever decide to sell the car years from now. Leaving the oem radio behind the ipad will also allow for CD insert (kidding I haven't owned a cd in a decade). But leaving the radio behind the iPad will also be cost effective method because I won't require an amp and it will keep the steering wheel buttons functioning like normal, I will try my best to retain all the features of the factory radio being able to setup a phone etc.

Quick copy paste of what the ultimate goal is

I will continue to update as parts begin to arrive

I decided that $95 for something I am going to cut up and modify is a big much. So add this little case to the purchase list, it is a "survival case" which I paid $5 shipping included for... this will make up the surround for the iPad, has a built in screen protector too which is an added bonus :)

Second Hand iPad Mini - $150
"Survival Case" - $5

SO prior to embarking on chopping up the metra din kit, I wanted to get the face of the case which I will be using as a bezel to sort-of be able to tell if it was possible without loosing the hazard button, I may move the hazard button up about 5mm, if needed.. so far the fitment leaves around 5mm all around..

Hey sm, isn't that big centre volume control in the way? And how would you use the radio/ aux input volume controls? Will these all be done on your steering wheel controls?

Looks like a great idea, please keep us posted!

Good question. I am taking things one step at a time and browsing what others have done in other forums. The idea is for the factory radio to still be retained with all functions.

Currently I am in the process of fab'ing the actual face with the custom bezel. (I will post details pics of what I am working with maybe even make a video).

Note: Metra makes a plug that goes into the back of the radio, and one that goes into the factory harness, I am debating on moving the factory radio to a different location altogether, possibly the trunk, this is just something I will do if the radio doesn't fit behind the iPad (I think it does though, just need to remove the 2 support brackets on the side and push the radio back into the dash).

I started to trim the dash kit and trimmed the bezel to get things ready for plastic weld... then I got little plastic pieces all over my glasses and my hair... gave up 90% of the way through after making a mess of plastic shavings everywhere...

well here is my progress of the day from beginning to end :) quite pleased with the outcome so far, managed to keep the hazard button untouched (which was my biggest worry)
