The message has the instruction to hold down the volumn button for 2 secs. to re-enable the audio system due to a power loss. While this message occurs any time power is lost, there's a bug in the system and it occurs randomly even when there is no power loss. The message also has a caveat that says if it happens frequently see your dealer. Just more features from the wonderful world of Honda's electronics.

following up, Traylaw's suggestion was spot on. my wife didn't understand that the message meant the power button on the radio, as opposed to the "main power button" which starts the car.

hopefully, this is a once in a blue moon anomaly and not another bad battery or something else lurking.
The volume button also fuctions to reboot the audio unit should things go wonky, it's like rebooting your phone. Just push and hold it until a message comes up asking if you want to reboot. Again nothing is lost if you reboot.
