You said the Haynes manual sheds no light. Unfortunately, Honda's FSM doesn't either. It just says to bled ABS brakes as if they were regular brakes, but to always bled the front brakes first.
My first inclination would be to replace the wheel cylinders because those can go bad, except that it sounds like you already did that.
Did your new wheel cylinders come with new bled screws, or did you reuse the old ones?
Were the brake lines damaged at all where they attach to the wheel cylinders?
Do any of the flexible brake hoses show signs of damage or fatigue?
