Sway bar links can feel 'tight' yet they can cause an audible knock. They can also knock from being a little bit loose.
Best way to tell is to disconnect them on both ends, and drive a few miles (as a diagnostic).
Upper control arm bushings can cause noise as can the upper strut bearings.
At this age, any rubber on a Gen1 is suspect. That includes motor mounts and exhaust hangars.
