Car Temperature Plummets When Going Thru Car Wash

7906 Views 30 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  rocky
Our 2018 Touring has no known oil or heat issues, but have noticed that when fully warmed up (red line pointing at the angle in the gauge), the marker drops like a rock when going through A 3 minute automatic car wash. The needle drops showing only 2 white lines like the car was just starting to warm up. After leaving the car wash, the car is up to normal operating temp within 1/8-1/4 mi. Outside temp was right at freezing. Car in neutral during wash. Never noticed it in any other car.

Is your HVAC set to AUTO?......if so, efans are sucking cold car wash water thru the radiator and into the engine compartment. Turn motor off when entering, on when exiting.
I don't use AUTO, but fan probably on. I'll turn everything off next time and see if that helps. Thanks!
"See if that helps"????? Helps what?

Only thing you have to turn off is the motor.
With Auto off and fan speed on low, the temp shouldn't drop right?

Does the car wash have an undercarriage sprayer? The engine compartment is so open this could also be a contributing factor.

I think the suggestion is that it's the radiator fan at the front of the car. Turning off your heater fan won't affect that, or if it does, it would make the issue more noticeable because you're transferring less heat from engine to cabin, thereby inducing the radiator fan to run more.

So, once again , you are claiming that the temperature controlled radiator fans, and the radiator thermostat are hostage to the needs of the AC fan???
That engine temperature excuse is getting kind of old.
Just saying,

Talk about replies getting old. For once........why don't you just NOT post some smart a__ remark. You're getting to be/sounding like someone else here with their constant smart a__ posts/remarks. Just saying.

The OP did say "fully warmed up", so maybe, just saying maybe, the radiator efans were running and sucking cold car wash water in. Is that impossible?.....only according to you. The OP also said "the car is back to normal after leaving the car wash. I'm just presuming cold car wash water cooled the motor (where the thermostat is located) momentarily and responding to the OP with a possibility as to why quickly cooled (momentarily).

The radiator fans can be engaged by means other than temperature. The radiator does not have a thermostat...t-stat is in the motor.
I always use recirculating system in car washes. Hate the soap and wax smell!

The absence of any load on the engine will cause it to cool. And as others point out and spray will cool.

On the first point-stand outside in 32 degree weather and do nothing you will get cold quickly. Go out in 32 degree weather and run, you put "load" on your body and get hot.,

If the motor was running when entering the car wash, it, or the cooling system, may have been getting a "cold shower" thru the car wash. As you said, all is normal after the car wash.

I always turn the motor off because I don't like the dirty/stinky car wash water smell entering the cabin (like rocky said).
I'm just waiting for someone to tell the OP to stop going through automatic car washes.

But back to the topic. If you heater or AC is on, so is your engine fan. Add to the fact you are spraying cold water on the radiator, intercooler and engine, of course it's going to cool off.

I was waiting for that comment too. The thing I'm trying to understand is if Auto is off , A/C compressor is off right? If so, Grills should be shut. Why the drop in temp?

Good thought. It does have underbody wash but haven't used it in a few weeks since salt season is over I hope!
Just added it up . I've been to the same car wash for 20 years. 5 different manufacturers, 7 different cars.None have dropped in temp going thru.
Have you tried raising the engine RPM?.......:Hmmmmm:

That's the problem. I needed a manual transmission!
I’m not buying it, this can’t possibly be a real observation.
But on the odd chance that it is, thank heaven for Jalopnik.

And The Onion but it’s always April Fools Day there.

Sorry to upset you. Bad day at the office?
Which one of my other screen names are you referring to? You need to be more specific.
