Car vibrations, possibly diagnosed, unknown parts, need expertise advice...

Hey guys, not 100% sure if this goes here or should go in another section of the forums.. but..

For some time my 04' Honda CRV has had some sort of vibration whist driving.. primarily more noticeable during acceleration. As to rule out the possibility of wheel balancing issue, I booked it into a local tyre place, and mentioned I was trying to diagnose this issue. Super nice guys helped me out and took it for a test drive then lifted to inspect before doing the wheel allignment/balance (didnt charge for the diagnose either

). The guy who test drove it certainly noticed the vibration, inspected and told me (and showed me) what the likely issue was.

1st there was the Dynamic Dampener for the rear Differential, it was a cylinder shape that was loose and handing by a pinch of rubber.

2nd, there was (I can't recall the exact name, hoping you guys can help me out here), some kind of mounting bushing (pick below) which can a split.

Apparently these parts were worn.

There was another part, I think its the Rear Differential Mount, cant remember if he said it need replacing or not, but I noticed a tiny splt in it.. probably best to replace ?

I'm having trouble identifying the name of these parts.. can anyone help ?

Also, besides a HONDA dealer, where else might I find replacement parts or kits?

I got a quote for $559 parts (parts from HONDA) and labor.. but if I can get the parts cheaper, dont think it'll be too hard of a job??

Any suggestions would be super..

I don't know about those parts but have someone check your motor mounts.
Is your CRV a 4WD? If so, it is probably due for a rear diffy fluid change. Use only Honda DP-2 fluid if you do it.
Research it more. Good writeups in these forums.
Online Honda parts dealers, such as Bernardi http://www.bernardiparts.com/?gclid=CJKy9ua6-c8CFQ-dfgod2pEKVQ often have diagrams to help identify the parts. Many others out there.

I had a look at them but couldnt see anything visually wrong with them. I think the place that told me about the rear diff issues inspected them.. but will consider getting someone to inspect just in-case

Not 100% sure tbh. As far as i know the rear wheels engage if the fronts lose traction? Is there a way to find out for sure if its 2wd or 4wd ?

Fixed.. its OCT 2004 build, but Gen2 (which I think starts from 2005 models).

[EDIT] Using the link provided, I search using my VIN number and it came up as "2005 CR-V SUV EX 5-Spd Man"

It looks like the parts in Question are

#18 - CUSHION, RR. DIFFERENTIAL

#19 - DAMPER, RR. DIFFERENTIAL DYNAMIC

#20 - RUBBER B, RR. DIFFERENTIAL MOUNTING

Question: .. how important is the DIFFERENTIAL DYNAMIC DAMPER ? Seems to be the more expensive part yet it just seems to bolt onto the side of the Diff..

If your CRV has a driveshaft, it is a 4WD model, unless someone removed the driveshaft.Since you say it has a rear differential, then it is a 4WD.
If you don't know when the fluid was changed in the rear diffy, change it. It takes just over 1 qt of Honda DP-2 fluid and it fairly easy to do. Look in the Sticky Notes for writeups on doing it. There are also good youtube vids on it,

BTW, if you hear a rubbing or screeching type noise while doing slow tight turns, it is usually an indication that the rear diffy fluid needs to be changed.

Thanks buffalo, yup it does have a driveshaft, so i guess its the 4wd model... though just to double check.. these CRV's, though 4wd/AWD(?), there rear wheel/read diff won;t engage unless traction is lost/reduced at the front wheels ?

Ill call up HONDA for a price on the diff oil.. not sure when it was changed, but maybe aswell if I gotta fix some parts in that area

.. no noises during turns though.

I came across a HONDA parts dealer from another forum, located in the USA, seems to ship to Australia which is good..

Not sure if the rear diff cushions come in pacjks of 2 or single.. might have to ask them.. but do these seems like the right parts mentioned above ?

Sorry, I can't help you with your question about parts. Perhaps someone else in this forum will help out.
The rear wheels get power when they are turning slower than the front wheel (s).

Let me throw this into your mix. Remove the propshaft to the rear diff. Test drive to see if vibrations are still there. If not replace the joints at either end if propshaft.

I'm with Rocky, sound like your u joints need replacing, sure the other parts are worn out. But they won't make a crv vibrate

Thanks guys

. I removed the drive shaft (same as prop shaft??) some time ago and yeh, still vibrations. I was gonna go ahead and replace the joints on the diff anyways, especially if they are worn or wearing just in-case. Ill probably replace the diff fluid too, not sure when it was replaced last.

Regarding drive shaft (U?) joints.. how are they meant to feel when turning them by hand ?

Driveshaft/propshaft u-joints should feel 'smooth' as the shaft is rotated by hand (with the u-joint tilted at a typical angle). If they feel 'jerky' they are binding. (The jerkiness is what induces vibrations)

Often, vehicles will experience the issue after they get a few miles on them (or different height tires or suspensions are fitted).

Since you removed your AWD driveshaft and the issue remained, there is no need to replace the u joints IMO. You MIGHT have a front CV joint causing the vibrations though.
