what causes this
Depends on the code that is causing the CEL to light.

If you are in the USA, an Auto Zone or other auto parts store will read your code for free.

When you get it, post back!

Until you get that code read, make sure you check your engine oil. It may need to be changed (dirty) or filled to the correct level if below the lower mark.
Use the recommended oil wt and class.

Just read your previous posts and see that you had the code read. The code number is very helpful to help diagnose your 2005 crv.
I believe you had it done at Advance Auto and you said :

"Hi everyone had my crv for six years. New to this site cause I have a problem with my crv. Its in limp mode and check engine lite is on took it to advance auto had them read the code says first bank of values are turn off. Which mean its in limp mode. Had this problem a least 3 other times once quart low on oil other 2 times been gas cap not tight. Check oil and replaced gas cap this time but still hasnt cleared. Any ideals what is causing it ".
